image Hetherington Brothers correspondence with 1843 part-entire from NSW to Richard Hetherington at the family seat in Scotland with light 'PAID AT/MAITLAND' handstamp (sold at a Melbourne auction in 2013 for $420), 1854 & 1855 envelopes with enclosed letters from Richard at "Port Curtis" to William at "Bonshaw/ Frasers Creek" the first with very fine previously unrecorded 28mm 'GLADSTONE/N S W' backstamp & the other with Richard's postmaster's manuscript "Gladstone Febry 23rd 1855" & previously unrecorded 28mm 'BYRON/N S W' backstamp, 1855 entire also to William, 1854 1856 & 1857 covers from Scotland to William with Embossed 1/- or 6d both cut-square or Stars 1d strip of 6, condition rather mixed but an important MBD-related group that were discovered only in 2011: sold at our auction of 19.11.2011 for $2345 (Sale 169 Lots 426 to 428). The brothers, who claimed descent from Scottish King Duncan I ('Macbeth's' King Duncan), arrived in NSW in 1856, William becoming a grazier & Richard trying his luck in a newly-opened part of the MBD. Port Curtis was renamed Gladstone in 1857, with Richard as the first postmaster. Bonshaw is on the south bank of the Dumaresq River that forms part of the NSW/Queensland border: a PO opened only in 1866. Byron was about 90km S of Bonshaw: the PO opened 1.1.1855 & was replaced by Inverell 15.9.1859. Frazers Creek PO 1.1.1853; renamed Ashford 1.12.1863. (9 items) (Image1)

image 1849 small envelope to "Gara/Sydney" endorsed on the flap "favored By Mr Frederick Manger" & rated "7" in black, very fine 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/NO*23/1849/SYDNEY' and largely fine to very fine strike of the scarce oval 'BRISBANE/[crown]/DE*2/1849/NEW.S.WALES' datestamp, very minor blemishes. The Brisbane datestamp is 10 days later than the Sydney cds, indicating that the letter arrived at Sydney by ship, probably from one of the Pacific Islands. "Gara" was a pastoral station in New England & it appears that the letter was missent via Brisbane, rather than overland from Sydney, Newcastle or Port Macquarie to Armidale. This is the only cover we can recall that transited the Moreton Bay District. Sold at our auction of 15.8.2014 for $1205 (Sale 193 Lot 450). (Image1)

image REGISTRATION ENVELOPES: 1912 Melbourne Printing KEVII 3d red on off-white stock with the Flap Folded to the Back plus Reset Text & Smaller-Boxed 'REGISTERED', some localised toning, unused. Unrecorded by Higgins & Gage. Only a couple of unused and two used examples plus four CTO are known, making this one of the most elusive of all Commonwealth-period States issues. On 19.12.1912, only 13 days before the first of the Kangaroo & Map stamps were issued, JB Cooke, the Victorian Government Stamp Printer, released a mere 3900 of these envelopes, of which some 3100 were destroyed before February 1914. It is likely that examples were CTO'd in anticipation of the looming destruction order. (Image1)

image POSTAL CARDS: 1898 QV 1d Scenic Issue HG 10 complete printer's galley-proof sheet for the eighteen cards from Series B (all with rounded rectangular vignettes) arranged in 3x6 format printed in black-brown on surfaced paper (not card) measuring 440x565mm, several horizontal or vertical folds through ten units leaving eight units in fine to very fine condition, some minor soiling and a couple of small repaired peripheral tears. An extraordinary and unique artefact that, despites the folds, presents remarkably well. Ex Ron Butler and Bernie Beston. Technically, for the following reasons, this is a tremendously significant item: 1) it is the only multi-image scenic postal card proof from Australia that is known to us; 2) it proves the bizarre layout of 17 different views, with 'Parliament House...' appearing twice, in positions R2/3 & R3/3; and 3) the stamp indicia appear to be from all-different electros. Alan Griffiths, in 'The Postal Stationery of Queensland' illustrates the sheet - minus the fourth row! - at page 30, and lists the views at page 28. Across many years, we have sold several Queensland scenic postal card proofs, in the range of $2500 to $4000 each. All of them have been printed on card-stock. This is a completely different genus of proof. (Image1)
