In 1908, black/white labels were introduced to replace use of the 2-line handstamps which were not, however, withdrawn. Old habits die hard & many covers have both a handstamp & a label. The ERD for a black label is 21.11.1908, and they were in general use for only three years. As a class they are difficult to find, with labels from all but the large towns being scarce to rare. POSTAL CARDS: QV Chalons 1d+1d rosine two impressions on the same side of a double-size buff card, centrally folded horizontally but otherwise with no means of separation, faults. 1882-95 QV Large Chalons 10/- imperforate colour trial pair in unadopted colour of blue-green (similar to the adopted colour for the Pound) on thin card, good even margins, poor strike of an unusual sans-serif 'SPECIMEN.' Handstamp (26½x3mm) in rosine with a very fine strike. Ex Bernie Manning: sold for $1105 (Sale 146 Lot 1060). Arthur Basset Hull at page 159 refers to a single of the 10/- in blue-green "overprinted [sic] 'SPECIMEN' horizontally in black in large sans-serif capitals, probably extending over three stamps". This may well have been derived from the same sheet as this item & the handstamp may be the same, as its length is sufficient to appear across three units (Image1)
