DPT Jul. 12, 1861", large double oval and "DUE 3 cts." handstamps on cover with faded #26 tied by "Wilton CT Jun. 4" circular datestamp to Fredericksburg VA; soiled, otherwise Fine to Very Fine, U.S. stamps were no longer valid for postage effective June 1, 1861. McClellan in frame with flags, in red, with matching letterhead, letter from a soldier, stampless patriotic cover with "U.S. Ship 3 Cts" circular datestamp applied over manuscript soldier's endorsement and addressed to Putnam CT, the letter is datelined "Hilton Head, Port Royal S.C. Headquarters of the 6th Regt., Co. A, C.V. (CT Vols), Dec. 5th, Camp Sherman, 1861" and reads in part, "…about twenty of our company is sick, nine of them have got camp measels (sic) and the rest fevers…We are building the largest fort there is in the world. There will be over six hundred acres in it and we have got it very well along so that if the rebels want some fun they had better try to take us. I think they would get all they wanted and some to spare. We have now a force of 16,500 infantry on this island besides Shermans. Hamilton and the Rhode Island batteries and our gun boats…The 6th and 7th C.V. are to remain at Hilton head until spring and are going into Barracks in about two weeks.a soldier's life is not what I expected…this war will not last forever, and if we are spared, we will return to our homes knowing that we have done our duty which we owe to our country…Israel B.
