June 20, 1864 soldiers letter discussing the Siege of Petersburg, letter reads in part, "Everything is remarkably quiet this monring, only been threee shots fired from the enemy's guns. I think we will be able to hold Petersburg. I thought when we first came here it was rather doubtful but we have strengthened our breastworks until it will be almost impossible for them to be taken. The enemy are close enough to shell them in the city which they have been doing since yesterday morning but have not done a great deal of damage yet. The people are very composed and confident that our army will be able to save them. Very few families have left their homes yet only those in the part of the city nearest the fortifications. Great many think the enemy are moving this morning but in what direction, no one seems to have any idea….Genl. W. Soldier's Letter discussing building a bomb proof while in the trenches at Petersburg Va. July 17, 1864, begins at the bottom of page 1 "…I have been positioned the front line of works for the past two days. We have been building a bomb proof to protect ourselves from morter shells. Built it about 20 ft. long 8ft wide & 3 feet deep into the ground & ? feet above ground covered with logs from a foot to 16 inches through that covered with three feet of dirt. I think that we shall feel pretty safe under it…The great raid into MD … has played out & the Jonnies have returned into VA. they made a bold dash & got pretty near Washington, probably they will get away without being punished. ????? was to draw Grant's army away from Petersburg but they failed to do so., Very Fine letter, The writer is William "Wib" Merrill of the 44th NY Infantry (the famous "Ellsworth's Avengers"). Oct. 1863, Union Soldier's Letter Camp near Van Buren Arkansas, begins with complaints of no outside news leading to rumors being spread, most of which are false, best part begins at the halfway point, "We are encamped on the meanest campground at present that we have ever had. The soil (or rather what ought to be soil) is nothing but a fine quicksand… We heard today that the rebel Genl. Shelby attacked the town of Fayetteville a few days ago and got beautifully whipped, losing 500 men. I hope this is true. Our Gen'l McNeil gave this same rebel a dub drubbing a short time since, and captured all his artillery. Shelby seems to be in a bad streak of luck, but I hope he will never get out of it till an ounce of lead takes him out of it….Direct your letters via Springfield MO instead of Fort Scott.", accompanied by cover with 3¢ 1861 (Scott 65) with geometric cancel and "Springfield MO Oct. 30 (?) 1863" double circle datestamp to Peoria City Iowa, Very Fine letter, see the rest of the letter online.
