1920 (May 6), U.S.S. Smith Thompson, "Sailor's Mail" free frank cover from Constantinople to Rhode Island, from the ship's maiden voyage and first home port; endorsed at upper left and addressed to Providence, with manuscript "Sailor's Mail/U.S. Naval Forces/In Near Eastern Waters" at upper right, overstruck by three-bar "Constinople [sic]/Turkey" ship's dater (ship name not struck up; too long?); opened roughly at top, Fine to Very Fine,
The Smith Thompson arrived at Istanbul on Feb. 25, 1920, serving for the next 14 months in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, in mainly humanitarian roles. Transferred to the Asiatic Division in 1921, she was among the American destroyers—the first foreign ships from anywhere—to arrive at Tokyo and Yokohama to assist following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. She later served off the coast of Nicaragua, on Yangtze River and South China Patrols, and protected Shanghai's foreign settlement following Japan's attack on the city. She was sunk as target practice in 1936 after being damaged beyond repair in a collision with the USS Whipple. (Image)
