Massive "A to Z" Collection of British Columbia Postmarks on Stamps, Covers and Cards, all neatly displayed on several hundred homemade pages in 28 binders. We estimate about 900 covers and cards, generally ranging from the 1920s to the 1990s. plus roughly 4,000 stamps on and off paper and pieces, ranging from the late 1890s to the 1990s. All the postmarks are displayed in alphabetical order (Abbotsford to Zeballos), and we note a very wide variety of post offices, as well as many different types of postmarks within, including broken circles, c.d.s., rollers, duplex, MOON, MOTO, POCON, a few slogans and other markings such as registration boxes, instructional markings, parcel handstamps, etc. The pages also include photographs of post offices, along with post office information including openings, closings, name changes, etc. There are too many post offices of note to list here, but our online pictures show a small sampling of the collection. Collection of Victoria BC (To, Through, or From) Postmarks on Covers and Cards, 1872-1980, containing roughly 650 covers and cards, organized chronologically on hundreds of pages, in 7 binders. The collection begins with a binder of 85 Victorian era covers (noting advertising corner cards and a few wrappers) and 27 post cards (including a few private post cards), with a few different postmarks found within, noting broken circles, including two Victoria / Brit Col from 1872 and 1883, along with c.d.s, duplex, and squared circles. The collection continues with a wide variety of material, primarily in the King George V and VI era, including first flight covers, AR cards, meter mail, O.H.M.S., military mail, event covers, a few first day covers, telegrams, and many advertising corner cards (including a few illustrated), and includes a variety of slogan, machine, flag, blackout, c.d.s, broken circle postmarks, and a few registered handstamps. Some of the rates paid include drop letters, airmail, postage due, registration, and special delivery, noting a few covers sent to the United States and Great Britain, with incoming mail from Victoria, Morocco, India, South Africa, just to name a few. Group of Five Mailed Unfranked Registered Government Usage Envelopes from the Small Queen Era, 1880-1890, 1880 Post Office "Returned dead letter" envelope mailed to Stratford, with "3" rate handstamp and instructions on backflap; 1884 Henry Morgan envelope with letter inside mailed to his wife, with scarce "REGISTERED / FREE" two-line handstamp and G. Powell "Secretary of State" endorsement (illustrated on p. 239 in Harrison); 1888 #10 envelope with "Department of Justice" logo on backflap, with an early use of the Ottawa Free boxed registration handstamp, and a "FREE R. Brown" handstamp (illustrated on p. 240 in Harrison); 1889 large O.H.M.S. envelope used to send registered mail between two post offices, with Grand Trunk railway postmark on back; and 1890 St John NB O.H.M.S. registered envelope "To be used for money order purposes only". First Officially Sealed issue on an 1891 3c Small Queen Cover, mailed from the Temple Chambers in Toronto on MAY.5.1891 (duplex tying 3c SQ) to Cobourg (undated receiver), redirected to Norwood, then Apsley (MAY.10 and JUN 2 backstamps), through Belleville (MAY.6), Norwood (MAY.7) and Peterboro (MAY.8). Pencil notation reading "Opened in mistake / by B.J. Hales / Apsley" (was intended to be opened by Hugh B. Hales Jr.) and "Not called for". Back has two Dead Letter Office datestamps (JUN.4 and JUN.5). The opened cover was repaired by a first issue Officially Sealed issue, not tied but belongs. A proper usage of this stamp (opened in error, then re-sealed), and rare, being the second earliest of only four recorded covers bearing the 1879 OX1 stamp. First Officially Sealed Issue on a 1900 Newfoundland Cover, mailed from St John's, Newfoundland on APR.23.1900 to Toronto (APR.28 receiver) without a return address. Franked with a 2c King Edward VII issue, underpaying the rate by 2c, as indicated by a circled "T", "manuscript "4c" (two different), "2" (cents) and "10" (centimes), with "REFUSED" handstamp, plus manuscript "Refused ap" on front. The cover was sent to the Dead Letter Office on MAY.18, opened (to search for a return address inside), sealed with the first issue Officially Sealed stamp, tied by another D.L.O. in purple on JUN.26. A vertical crease and wrinkling at left do not detract from this rare usage, one of only four recorded OX1 issues on cover, and the only one on cover from Newfoundland. First Officially Sealed Issue on an 1898 France Cover, mailed from Paris on OCT.21.1898 to Winnipeg, with NOV.2 receiver on back, through New York (OCT.30). Attempts to deliver were made on NOV.3 (duplex on front) and NOV.4 (carrier datestamp on front), manuscript "not for G. R. Howard" added (likely by carrier) and "NOT CALLED FOR" handstamp. The cover was then sent to the newly formed (JUL.1.1898) Winnipeg Dead Letter Office on DEC.15 where it was opened to investigate, then re-sealed with two overlapped Officially Sealed seals, each tied by Winnipeg D.L.O.. datestamps and forwarded to the D.L.O. Canada (DEC.20 c.d.s. in purple). Vertical crease, else very fine. Of the four recorded covers with OX1, this is the only one originating from overseas.. (Image)

Second Officially Sealed Issue on a 1905 Double-Weight Registered Cover to England, mailed from Johnville, Québec on APR.8.1905 to Dartford, England. Endorsed "Coins" with initials, and as the cover may have been partially opened, it was sent to the Montréal Dead Letter Office (APR.11 oval datestamp in purple) via the Lake Mégantic & Sherbrooke R.P.O.. It was further opened for examination, then re-sealed with three bluish paper Officially Sealed stamps, each tied by its own Montréal D.L.O. c.d.s., with an additional red wax D.L.O. Crown Seal on back. It was then forwarded to destination through London (APR.19 oval registration transit) and Dartford receiver dated next day. The franking comprises a 5c Edward VII (paying the registration fee) and two 2c Edward VIIs (paying double the Empire rate). Creases and tears, opened on three sides, still a remarkable and rare cover, with fewer than five recorded. Accompanied by a 2016 Greene Foundation certificate. (Image)

Third Officially Sealed Issue on a 1910 Cover Forwarded to Montserrat, mailed from somewhere in Canada to Liverpool, where it received two Liverpool datestamps, a partial double circle next to a 2c Edward VII stamp, and a c.d.s. dated FEB.13.1910. Then for some reason it was sent to the Ottawa Dead Letter Office, where it received four D.L.O. datestamps (three oval, incl. one in purple, and one circular) dated MAR.10, MAR.12, MAR.14 and MAR.18, as well as five white paper Officially Sealed stamps. It is assumed the cover may have been sent to Liverpool by mistake, as it received an attached note reading "The enclosed letter containing two bills of lading is apparently intended for delivery at your office", and finally there is an APR.21 Montserrat receiver. Parts of the cover are missing, still a fascinating routing and possibly the largest franking of an Officially Sealed issue. (Image)

Third Officially Sealed Issue on a 1908 Registered Part Cover to England, as this is only the back of a cover, part of the story is missing, but we still have many important pieces of the puzzle. Probably mailed from Toronto (c.d.s. cancels dated NOV.30.1908 on back were common practice on registered mail), alongside a bold free-strike of the Toronto D.L.O. large circle in purple dated DEC.1.1908, with three lighter strikes tying two of the three white paper Officially Sealed stamps (likely used to re-seal the cover opened for inspection). Two of these stamps are also tied by a FEB.22.1909 London oval registration datestamp, and finally we note a FEB.22.1909 oval registration datestamp from Ashford, Kent, where the cover was probably initially addressed to. Fourth Officially Sealed Issue on a 1915 Postage Due Cover to England, mailed from Halifax on JUL.12.1915 (9am) to Folkestone, England. Franked with a 2c carmine Admiral, soon after the start of the War Tax regulation (APR.15.1915), it received a "RETURNED FOR WAR TAX" handstamp in green, a "T10" (10 centimes, equivalent to 2 cents double deficiency) handstamp in black, and a JUL.12 purple Halifax D.L.O. c.d.s. on back, as well as a 2c first issue Postage Due stamp, tied by an AUG.20 double circle Halifax c.d.s. The cover was opened to try and find who to charge the deficiency to, then re-sealed with three of the Officially Sealed fourth issues, then re-mailed with a second Halifax machine dated JUL.12 at 3:30. At some point along the route it was re-directed (by green handstamp) to the "CANADIAN / EXPEDITIONARY / FORCE", with manuscript "2d C. E. Force" also in green also with "No. 4 Staty Hospital (Laval) / Shornecliffe" manuscript in green. Presumably the person could not be found, and so there is a "Halifax / Can" manuscript notation in green, and finally an AUG.20 Halifax c.d.s. receiver on back. Opened on three sides for display, still a fascinating cover (especially with all its green markings), with rare usage of the OX4 stamps, a must have for the Admiral collector "who has everything". Accompanied by a 2015 Greene Foundation certificate. (Image)
