POSTAL CHARGES: 1960 (Mar 1) 6d with 'IXIXIXIXIX' at the Base on 7½d Yam House with Double Overprint SDG D1a, unusually well-centred, CTO at Goroka with full unmounted gum and none of the characteristic toning that bedevils this issue, Cat £2500. A gem. Ex Ed Garrard. RPSL Certificate (1980). Tim Rybak's and John McNabb's CTO examples sold at our auctions of 26.4.2008 and 12.10.2012 for $2796 (Sale 135 Lot 442) & $3145 (Sale 176 Lot 950) respectively.
Geoff Kellow in 'The Australian Philatelist' (Summer 1989) stated that three sheets of 36, readily distinguished by placement of the overprints, have been identified. He was able to account for 42 used examples, of which 24 - including this example - are from the First Sheet, on which the second overprint is positioned downwards and to the right. (Image1)

Cat No: 2
POSTAL CHARGES: 1960 (Mar 1) '1d.' on 6½d SG 2 with the Surcharge in Carmine & Twice in Black marginal example from the top of the sheet, characteristic faint toning on the reverse, unmounted. Unlisted by Gibbons. Extremely rare as only one sheet of 36 was printed. This stamp is essentially identical to John McNabb's non-marginal example - no toning but lightly mounted - that sold at our auction of 12.10.2012 for $1985 (Sale 176 Lot 954). These are the only two examples we have offered.
It is almost certain that the carmine overprint was considered unsatisfactory, and the sheet overprinted again in black - very accurately superimposed - but the coincident overprints were still difficult to see. The sheet was therefore overprinted a third time, again in black - deliberately misplaced 4½mm higher - and placed into stock. This deliberate variety (as distinct from an error) deserves Gibbons listing. (Image1)
