Cat No: 94c

image 1916-31 Bi-Colours 1d black & carmine-red SG 94c complete sheet of 40 (5x8) with TS Harrison Imprint at base and also with the so-called Substituted Cliché with Retouched (Doubled) Lower Frame above Maltese Cross & Damaged Maltese Cross [Pos 28] and Vertical Line to Right of Left Value Tablet [both Pos 32 & 37] (which Croaker speculates may be the result of a Cracked Electro across both units), a couple of tiny aging marks on the back of a few units, some perf reinforcing affecting 10 units otherwise unmounted, Cat £140+ for mounted singles plus a substantial premium for the unlisted varieties. Rosenblum states (page 37) that the frame of [28] was damaged & inexpertly replaced: "It is doubtful whether there exists elsewhere in the whole realm of philately a stamp of greater technical interest". Croaker responds (page 46) "This clear case of bumping-up and retouching was theatrically described by Rosenblum as a substituted cliche, a double strike, and a retouch all in one. It was clearly only the latter ...". Peter Troy's black & red 'Substituted Cliché' single on cover (!) sold in 2009 for $460. (Image1)

image 1930 Airmails 'Aeroplane' Overprints Harrison Printing 1/- sepia & deep olive as SG 117 but with the Overprint in Deep Carmine TS Harrison Imprint strip of 3 from the base of the sheet, characteristic minor gum tropicalisation, two units with small hinge remainders, the central unit unmounted. Unlisted in Gibbons. Rosenblum states (page 43) that "At first, a deep carmine was selected, but after only about 10 sheets of the 1/- had been printed therewith, the colour was found to be too dark, and for all subsequent printings the colour was a lighter carmine-red" [Note that the number of stamps we have now seen with Deep Carmine Overprint suggests that the quantity overprinted in this colour was greater than the 10 sheets (400 stamps) indicated by Rosenblum and repeated by Croaker. This actually makes it more deserving of being listed by Gibbons]. Rev Roger Lee's imprint block of 6 - one upper unit mounted - sold at our auction of 29.6.2023 for $900. (Image1)

image POSTAL HISTORY: 1905 (Jan 6) usage of 'Austral Pearl' real photo PPC of Native Villagers & Huts and lengthy message headed "Sister's Home, Kiriwina, Jan 6th 1905" which explains that the image "was taken some years ago at Dobu by one of the Missionaries. I have not a view of the Kiriwinan houses yet", to Australia with BNG 1d with 'BNG'-in-bars cancel and slightly doubled 'SAMARAI/25JA05/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' cds alongside, one slightly bumped corner and a few minor aging marks. Kiriwina is the largest of the Trobriand Islands, 250km north of Samarai; the card was presumably carried there by the next Burns Philp steamer, which would explain the almost three weeks that elapsed between writing and posting. This may well be the earliest known item of mail from the Trobriand Islands. There was no Post Office on the islands until Losuia opened in 1926. (Image1)
