1901-05 British New Guinea ½d to 1/- matching set of corner blocks of 4 [21-22] from the lower-right of the imperforate imprimatur sheets of 30 (5x6) on ungummed horizontal-watermarked wove paper, margins large to enormous, each endorsed or handstamped at lower-right with dates between 17.9.1901 & 29.9.1901, 2½ to 3 months after the stamps were issued on 1.7.1901, some mostly minor blemishes/soiling largely confined to the reverse excepting the ½d & 1d which are noticeably soiled.
Believed to be the only surviving set of blocks. The complete sheets are illustrated in 'The De La Rue Collection: Volume 2', edited by Frank Walton, between pages 2392 & 2404. Note that the 2/6d, issued in 1905, does not exist in this format. Absent from 'Besancon'. Tim Rybak's and Peter Troy's sets of pairs sold for $4830 (2008) & $4895 (2009) respectively.

Quite likely the only known example of this rare stamp with a 'Watermark Cross'. See Croaker at page 17-18 for an explanation of the rarity of the 'Watermark Cross' used to signify the centre of the Papermarker's sheet (each of which were cut into six printing sheets), and of which he had seen only a handful of examples all on the Watermark Vertical Thin Paper 2d.
