1901 commercial cover with printed address of a Sydney bookseller, BNG 2d cancelled with poor strike of the 10-bars 'BNG' cancel (Lee #60; rated E) of Kulumadau (1) and almost fine strike of the rare unframed 'WOODLARK/SP8/----/BNG' cds (Lee 59 with inscription error (no 'S'); rated F; year slugs omitted) alongside, poor Samarai transit backstamp & very fine Sydney arrival of SP27/01, horizontal & vertical folds and all-over aging. Kulumadau was on the north coast of Woodlark Island. PO late-1899; replaced by Bonagai 1.7.1905. Ex Roger Lee: sold at our auction of 9.11.2002 for $840. This is probably the earliest recorded cover from Kulumadau with a BNG franking. Sir Robert Bear ran a legitimate bookshop but was also Sydney's most prominent purveyor of pornography. (Image1)

1902 commercial linen-lined cover-front to Perth (WA) with rare franking of BNG 1/- pair (exceptional centring, a little faded but not oxidised, Cat £150+ x15+ on cover) tied by 8-bar 'B.N.G' cancel, fine 'PORT MORESBY/20MY02/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' cds at lower-left, red registration lines but not obviously registered, crease at lower-right and minor blemishes. Very rare: one of the highest non-philatelic BNG Lakatois frankings known.
In February 1902, Robert Bunning established a stamp business called Hamilton Macrae, in Perth, specialising in granting loans secured against stamp collections, at exorbitant rates of interest. In 1910, one of his victims sued. The local 'Sunday Times' commented on "the smellful & highly malodorous affairs of Hamilton Macrae..." We have not previously encountered this 'dealer'. The huge hardware retailer Bunnings, now owned by Wesfarmers, was founded in Perth in 1907 by brothers Arthur and Robert Bunning. This seems like too much of a coincidence. (Image1)

The message states "I have given Mr Bayldon the box of shells and the envelope of seeds ... [he] is the chief officer of the Moresby". Lionel Armit - son of police commander William Edington Armit, infamous for his massacres of Australian & New Guinea indigenes - was a government administrator. 1901-05 British New Guinea Rosettes Watermark Vertical Thin Paper Comb Perf 14 4d black & sepia SG 13b, central 'PORT MORESBY/1-AUG08/PAPUA' cds cancel, Cat £1300. The Thin Paper 4d 6d 1/- & 2/6d were made available only to the Queensland Agent-General in London. A few used examples are recorded, presumably having been sent to Port Moresby with requests for per favour cancellations. The date on this stamp is the day before that on Tim Rybak's example which sold in 2008 for $1323. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “contemporary cancel ... only around 270 sold without the Papua overprint, and extremely rare in used condition”. (Image1)

1901-05 British New Guinea Rosettes Watermark Vertical Thick Paper Line Perf 14 2/6d black & brown SG 16 with Watermark Cross between Rosettes, central Port Moresby '-3DE06' unframed cds cancel, a couple of minor marks & a very small thin at right, Cat £4000+ for normal. Quite likely the only known example of this rare stamp with a 'Watermark Cross'. See Croaker at page 17-18 for an explanation of the rarity of the 'Watermark Cross' used to signify the centre of the Papermarker's sheet (each of which were cut into six printing sheets), and of which he had seen only a handful of examples all on the Watermark Vertical Thin Paper 2d. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “very rare stamp & the only recorded example with this watermark combination”. (Image1)

1907 Small 'Papua.' Overprints Rosettes Watermark Horizontal Thick Paper Line Perf 14 ½d black & yellow-green SG 34a with characteristic Streaky Matt Gum, quite well-centred, very small hinge remainder, Cat £5500 (2023). Gibbons has inexplicably deleted this listing in the 2024 & 2025 editions, although the footnote under SG 45a still states that "Nos 34a 35b and 41a derive from small quantities of sheets from the original thick paper printings (in bright shades) which were still available at Port Moresby and were then included in the stock sent to Brisbane for overprinting". SG 35b has similarly been deleted, but SG 41a remains listed. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “Very rare with probably only 2 sheets of 30 printed ... superb & fresh”. (Image1)

1907 Small 'Papua.' RPSL Certificate (1963) as the then SG 37b. Ex 'Dr Gyp' (Perrazzo). Rare: only one sheet of 30 was affected. This is believed to be the largest multiple known of this error, and the upper unit unique in that it is the only one to show parts of four separate impressions of the overprint. (Image1)

1907 Small 'Papua.' Overprints Rosettes Watermark Vertical Thin Paper Comb Perf 14 ½d black & yellow-green SG 38 complete sheet of 30 (5x6) with Printers' Guideline Crosses in the margins and White Leaves at Right [Pos 20] & Unshaded Leaves at Left [Pos 28] additionally with the Overprint Progressively Misplaced to Right on the right-hand two columns and the units in the second-from-left & centre columns all with Kiss Prints (or Double Prints SG 38a; £2500 each) ranging from the barely-visible to the clearly-pronounced on [Pos 3, 7, 12, 17 & 23], some perf reinforcing and a few light aging marks, without gum. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “some stamps with portions of overprint doubled due to a kiss print or shift” but does not expertise it as SG 38a.
Presumably caused by missing or broken positioning pins, which either led to the overprint form 'bouncing' or not being struck properly on the first pass requiring a second strike. All examples of Double Prints we have seen have two almost coincident impressions. In their unpublished work Peter Troy & Jerry Blair note "Few examples known". Sir Gawaine Baillie's 'Double Print' single sold in 2007 for £3450; Peter Troy's single sold in 2008 for $3450 (when catalogued at £2750; it reached £4250 in the 2023 edition, only to be cut back to the current £2500 the following year). A remarkable truly 'one of a kind' sheet. (Image1)

1907 Small 'Papua' Overprints Watermark Verical Thin Paper 1d black & carmine with the Overprint Misplaced Vertically (Reading Upwards) SG 39a vertical strip of 4 from the base of the sheet, the upper three units CTO with Port Moresby cds of '10JAN08' and the base unit unused, gum removed, Cat £21,500+ for singles. The equal-largest recorded multiple of this marvellous BNG/Papua rarity. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2012).
Two sheets of 30 were affected. Hamilton Croaker cites a description of a complete sheet as having 16 of 30 units with a complete overprint - as is the case here for the upper unit. On the pattern evident here, only 15 units would have a complete overprint, so this item may be from the other sheet. Many examples have the overprint under-inked, which is often referred to as "light grey". This strip has well-inked overprints. Fresher than Jerry Blair's similar but slightly aged strip of 4 that sold at our auction of 26.3.2025 for $12,200 (Sale 259 Lot 1276). (Image1)

Ex William Frazer and 'Tatiana': sold at a Swiss auction house in 2015 for £38,400. David Brandon Certificate (2003).
Only 24 stamps from one sheet of 30 (5x6) were affected by the double overprint, of which five remained uncancelled. Of the 19 cancelled stamps, this is the only block in existence. As can be seen from our illustration, each unit has a differing configuration of the two overprints. (Image1)
