POSTAL HISTORY: 1906 (Jan 1; New Year's Day) Belgian picture postcard to "Lahad Datu (Darrel Bay)/BN Borneo", from the Netherlands with Queen Wilhelmina 5c tied by Amsterdam cds, largely very fine 'GANTIAN/15/FEB/6' (year slug only) and 'SANDAKAN/19/FEB/1906' cds alongside, small corner bend at lower-left & very minor blemishes. A great rarity of British Borneo.
Gantian was initially intended to be the capital of the Territory. However, its location on a mangrove island, was unfortunate (British understatement). PO renamed from Gaya circa -.12.1899; replaced by Jesselton early-1901. The cds is recorded 18.1.1900 to 3.8.1900 only, with only two examples recorded on postal articles. Later usage of 'GANTIAN' has not previously been recorded. The use as a transit marking indicates usage as a 'relief' or emergency cds at Jesselton (now Kota Kinabulu). Sandakan is some 300km by road due east of the capital (at least double that distance by sea), and about 150km NNW of Lahad Datu. (Image1)

POSTAL HISTORY: 1931 internal cover to "State Bank/Jesselton" with scarce commercial franking of Anniversary 3c Murut Native & 6c Orangutan pair tied by two light but discernible strikes of double-circle 'BEAUFORT/BNB' cds with scarce black/white R label (slightly trimmed on opening), light but obvious rubber 'JESSELTON/3OCT1931/REGISTRATION' arrival backstamp (Proud Type R11; noted as used 7FEB1931 to 1JAN1932). Ted Proud states "became distorted & larger" but this example is quite different and may be a previously unrecorded marking. (Image1)
