image POSTAL HISTORY: 1865 entire letter headed "Alofi/Febr 17 65" and signed "WG Lawes" carried per favor by a ship's captain to "Revd H Nisbet/Malua" in Samoa, multiple folds & several repaired minor peripheral tears, very fragile but entirely legible. Ex Tony Eastgate. A great Pacific Islands rarity. William George Lawes was one of the most prominent missionaries in the South West Pacific. He was posted to Savage Island (Niue), arriving in 1865. In 1874, he & his wife became the first permanent white settlers in Papua, where he started 11 mission stations & produced the first book in a Papuan language. Rev Henry Nisbet arrived in Samoa in 1841 and, apart from two years in the New Hebrides, remained there until his death in 1879.
