1862-63 Pelure Paper Imperf 1d orange-vermilion SG 81, full rich colour with minor discolouration at the top, close even margins, Cat £12,000. BPA Certificate (1979) states "large-part original gum", with which we are not comfortable. A rare stamp, of which very few unused examples are recorded. Joseph Hackmey's two very fine examples sold for US$16,800 (2009) & US$8700 (2010) respectively
Studio Filatelico Toselli Certificate (1996) specifically reinforces the findings on the BPA certificate & states (translated) "...splendid quality & graded by me 100/100", despite their photo clearly showing the discolouration at the top. (Image1)

1894 Private Essays (circa) Large Format Queen & Sailing Ship Design imperforate sheetlet of 10 (5x2) in red-violet on thick unwatermarked ungummed wove paper, very fine. In 2011, three sheetlets in different colours were offered at auction for NZ$45,000 and a similar sheetlet to this - toning in the margins - was offered for NZ$12,500. 'Midas' and Sir Gawaine Baillie had only the one single, in blue, that sold for £1380.
This and the next 4 lots are essays submitted to the New Zealand Post Office by Charles Lewis MP of Christchurch and bear the inscription 'THE LEWIS ENGRAVING PROCESS' in the ribbon below the portrait. They are considered by some to be part of the development process resulting in the iconic 1898 Pictorials series, or could simply have been submitted as samples of his printing process. (Image1)

1949 Royal Visit series of stamp-size photographic reductions of hand-drawn designs in horizontal format x9 including HMS 'Vanguard' x2 and two very similar square designs, closed scissor-cut almost impinges on one design. This and the next three lots were prepared by eminent New Zealand designer, James Berry. The project had reached the perforating stage when the tour was cancelled because of the King's poor health, and the stamps - except a few of the 3d Vanguard that have fire-damage - were destroyed.
