image 1885 (Nov 16) envelope to Germany endorsed "via Naples/Captain KW Resius [?], SMS Marie" with QV Diadems Perf 13 8d orange & De La Rue 1d rose tied by Sydney duplex cancels, Brindisi '26/DIC/85' transit and Berlin '31 12' arrival backstamps, a couple of minor blemishes. Carried by German warship SMS 'Marie' on her return journey after running aground off New-Mecklenburg, German New Guinea on 26.12.1884 and spending four months being repaired in dry-dock at Sydney. The voyage was slow as she had to avoid stressing the hull, and this item was transferred en route, arriving in Berlin six weeks before the ship arrived at Wilhelmshafen. Colin Tabeart states that North-German Lloyd ships occasionally carried Australian mail in the period before they began a contract service to Sydney in 1886 (see Vol 2 p310), but does not mention any mail carried by German naval vessels.
