1849 Rejected Designs for the First Issue Robert Clayton's 1d design based on Great Britain's 'Penny Black' lithographed proofs in blue, scarlet or blue & scarlet all on stout wove paper, reduced to stamp-size, aged on the reverse. The originals - illustrated by Alfred Basset-Hull on Plate I - were sold by Alfred van Dyck to Thomas Tapling, but not before he had made several sets of facsimiles. Sir Gawaine Baillie's similar set, affixed to a non-contemporary piece of paper endorsed "4", sold in 2005 for $2795. The Baillie catalogue noted one other set, in George Ginger's collection, but we can't locate it in the Ginger catalogue: this may be the set referred to. (3) (Image1)

1851-53 QV Laureates Bluish Medium-Wove Paper 1d carmine SG 45 horizontal pair [Pos 2/5-6], the left-hand unit with Two Leaves Right of 'SOUTH' SG 45b, barely visible surface imperfection at 'W' of 'NEW' on the left-hand unit mentioned for complete accuracy, close even margins and virtually full lightly crazed original gum both of which are quite remarkable for this issue and in combination with the major variety may well be unique, Cat £5000+ for normal unused singles, the variety being unpriced by Gibbons. Magnificent. BPA Certificate (1964) states "original gum" but doesn't mention the Two Leaves variety, despite it being listed in the Gibbons catalogues of the period.
Fabulous provenance: Ex Maurice Burrus, Lars Amundsen, Dr Mario Tomasini, 'Besancon' Part III (sold in 2018 for SFr12,100) and 'Dubois' Part I: sold in 2022 for SFr9150.
We are not persuaded that the paper is 'bluish'. Despite the printing shade being not as deep as SG 44, there is nothing 'bluish' about the paper. If we are correct and this is SG 44, the catalogue value is £10,000+ for normal unused singles, plus a significant premium for the unpriced variety. (Image1)

1842 lengthy cross-written entire letter dated "Sept 11th, 42" to England with largely fine strike of the rare 'PAID AT/CLARENCE RIVER' handstamp in red plus a part-strike in 'relief' alongside (the ink apparently not suitable) rated "7"[d] for 4d inland letter plus 3d outgoing ship letter, light 'PAID SHIP LETTER/OC*19/1842/SYDNEY' crowned oval datestamp on the face, London '18MR18/1843' transit backstamp where rated "8"[d] inland delivery charge and very fine 'NORTHAMPTON' arrival backstamp of the same day, some soiling & blemishes and vertical file fold. Clarence River PO opened 1.10.1840; renamed Grafton circa 1849. Grafton is some 600kms N of Sydney, it apparently took this item more than a month to travel there (or is the date incorrect?).
