image 1854-59 QV Large Diadems 1/- imperforate plate proof in steel-blue on ungummed unwatermarked paper, close even margins, small fault at the top and thinning at the upper corners does not detract from the very fine facial appearance, very fine part-strikes of the '[CA]NCELLED' Handstamp at upper-left & lower-left, Cat £14,000 in a footnote below SG 101. Ex Conrad Latto, 'Manwood' and 'Dubois' (IV): sold for SFr6100. Position 4 from the original block of 6. Slightly larger than the very fine example [Pos 5] that sold at our auction of 27.4.2022 for $8085 (Sale 247 Lot 1212). Six examples each of the so-called 'Ormond Hill Specimens' were produced by Perkins Bacon for all of 'their' Colonies at the request of Rowland Hill's nephew and gifted to him, action that resulted in the Agent for the Crown Colonies terminating Perkins Bacon's printing contracts. 75 different stamps were involved, of twenty British Colonies and four stamps of Chile. The 'CANCELLED' handstamp was applied to blocks of 6 that were later separated, often with scissors or a blade, resulting in many of the individual stamps being cut-into or having trimmed perfs on one or more sides. [NB: for NSW no issued stamps were available so plate proofs retained by the printers were utilised] (Image1)
