Superb. RPSL Certificate (2021) states "Smudged print" and "Memo: not a double print". We agree that it is not a double print, in the sense that the paper has not been set to the stone twice. However, the printing is not 'smudged', which would imply a lateral movement as if a thumb had redistributed the ink. Rather, the doubling is quite regular, in the nature of a kiss print. (Image1)

image 1853 Queen-on-Throne Essay uncleared die proof of the finished 'TWO PENCE' design in indigo with engine-turning beyond the stamp area and a series of faint guidelines on the die on ungummed double-lined watermark '2' paper with a deckled edge at right. Superb. Unissued and rare: only six examples recorded, of which three are institutionalised. Ex Julian Beresford, Marcel Stanley, Sir Miles Rivett-Carnac - sold for £3335 - and 'Alvarado' (Paul Fletcher): sold for £4560. Geoff Kellow at page 102 in 'The Stamps of Victoria' states that Perkins Bacon produced this design for NSW in error, in November 1853, a mistake that greatly delayed production of the Victorian 1d and 6d in this design. He also states that these proofs were created in 1877, presumably for the annual South Kensington Exhibition. (Image1)

image 1856-60 QV Small Diadems Imperforate 2d Plate I plate proof complete sheet of 120 (12x10) in black on ungummed unwatermarked yellowish wove paper, some ironed-out wrinkling & creasing doesn't detract from the exceptional facial appearance. Unique: an important & magnificent showpiece. This is the only complete proof sheet of any Australian imperforate stamp: see below. Ex Guy Hutson: sold in 2013 for £2400 (well below what our vendor was prepared to bid). Apart from its aesthetic appeal, technically this is a highly significant item. Perkins Bacon were master engravers & printers but their plate-making left a lot to be desired. The uneven spacing between the units highlights the inadequacy of that aspect of their work. We believe the next largest surviving piece is a block of 20. John White had a similar NSW 2d sheet with holes drilled through the eight units to be retouched. However, it was printed 13.9.1860, seven months after the perforated stamps had been issued. Lord Vestey had two similar Western Australian sheets but they were produced for the 1861 perforated issue. (Image1)

image 1871-1902 QV De La Rue Crown/NSW Watermark '36' 9d perforated colour trial singles on very thick highly surfaced ungummed unwatermarked paper, in black, pale orange-red or deep violet, exquisite freshness. Superb proofs of this unissued design. Sold at our auction of 22.2.2013 for $2586 (Sale 179 Lots 1217-1219). 'Carrington' (Mark Dankin) had ten different colours. They were misidentified as being related to the 1906 9d Commonwealth design, and sold for $5825. They were subsequently sold at our auction of 20.4.2015 for $13,055 (Sale 203 Lot 191). (3) Basset Hull Vol II at pp244-245 states that a 9d denomination was requested in 1871. In fact, six sheets of a 9d value were printed on Wmk '2' paper but all were later destroyed. Basset Hull makes no mention of the 9d design; it may have been that shown here; however, it seems remarkable that the creation of a new die and plate should pass without mention. Instead, a 9d surcharge was applied to sheets of the redundant 10d brown, and Hutson mentions a pair of 9d surcharge essays in the Royal Collection. In 1876, De La Rue was requested to prepare a 1/- stamp, which is the same design as this 9d. It has been suggested that that these 9d proofs were prepared in 1897, as they are on similar thick stock as used for colour trials of the 1897 Jubilee values. However, Basset Hull states those colour trials were produced by a "photo-mechanical" process: presumably he means they were derived from the die, rather than struck from the die. These 9d proofs are not of a photographic nature. Could they have been struck directly from a 9d die that was supplied by De La Rue to NSW as early as 1871? (Image1)
