image 1942 (Feb 19) airmail cover from Durham, Great Britain to "Royal Air Force/Headquarters/JAVA" redirected (where?) to the RAF Liaison Officer in Melbourne with very fine 'RAAF/BASE PO No1/8OC42/ MELBOURNE/AUST' arrival backstamp, forwarded again to "Repatriation Sanitorium/McLeod Mont Park" (a polite euphemism for the Mont Park mental asylum) with Melbourne machine of 14OCT/1942, minor spotting at the base. An outstanding WWII 'Horseshoe' Route cover. Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15.2.1942. Forces personnel who were not already in the Dutch Indies were withdrawn there and absorbed into the very short-lived American British Dutch & Australian Command (ABDA). The Japanese invaded Java 10.1.1942 and all resistance ceased 12.3.1942. According to Ted Proud, the final eastwards flying boat service beyond India, per 'Coorong', got as far as the Andaman Islands, arriving at Port Blair 20.2.1942. After that, services terminated at Calcutta. This item was presumably held there and forwarded by ship. Other explanations are invited. (Image1)

image 1943 Japanese Occupation Sumatra Death Railway Australian Red Cross envelope with Thick Obliterating Bar at the Base to a RAAF member in Java where redirected to "Singapor" & then to "Pakan Baroe/Sumatra 6", Japanese censor cachet in violet & han of Asanuma in rosine, water-stained at left. Mail to or from Australians on the Death Railway is rare. A very fine example to the same serviceman sold at our auction of 28.8.2024 for $1770. By mid-1944, the Japanese had transported 6600 POWs from around the region to complete the rail link across the Sumatran Highlands between Pakan Baroe & Moeara, a distance of 220km. They were mostly British & Dutch but about 300 were a mix of Americans, Australians & New Zealanders. Conditions were appalling and more than 700 died during the project, which was completed 15.8.1945, the day Japan surrendered. It was only ever used for transporting POWs. Camp 6 was at Soengeipagar, but all mail was processed through Pakan Baroe. (Image1)

Late in the war, the Japanese allowed telegrams to be sent to POWs. However, significant delays were still commonplace and very few such messages were delivered before Japan surrendered.
