China: Tai Yung Tea Company, Antique Chinese Tea Brick, likely 1900s-1950s, Size: 9 x 7 x 0.8 inches compressed block of tea. The face has Chinese traditional text at the bottom with the company name with a building or shrine flanked by tea plants with tea leaves and the top of the face with 5 large 5-point stars. The back of the block is broken up into 16 sections with ornate designs in the middle and deep groves, possibly to help break the block into pieces. It is in excellent condition. Compressed tea, called tea bricks, tea cakes or tea lumps, and tea nuggets according to the shape and size, are blocks of whole or finely ground black tea, green tea, or post-fermented tea leaves that have been packed in molds and pressed into block form. This was the most commonly produced and used form of tea in ancient China prior to the Ming Dynasty. This example is in excellent shape. From an old estate. Est. HK$250-350
