image Madagascar. 1943 (Jan 23) Air Mail cover to U.S.A with Madagascar 1f50 + 2f50 cancelled at Tananarive and Kenya 10c + 15c + 50c + 5sh all cancelled violet "POSTAGE PAID AT A.P.O", British Censorship label and cachet, backstamped at E.A. A.P.O 84 (Feb 3, Nairobi). A scarce and intriguing combination franking, the KUT stamps overlapped by the censor seal applied in Madagascar (now partly removed to display the stamps) proving they were applied locally, the cancel being the "Postage Paid at A.P.O in O.E.T.A" handstamp used at E.A A.P.O 74 and 75 in 1941 now reused with the final line cut away. Rossiter illustrates two other January 1943 air mail covers with local stamps for postage to Kenya and G.B stamps applied for the onward air fee to U.S.A all similarly cancelled. The air fee was reduced to 4/70 on January 1st but this was probably not known in Madagascar at this date, with the old fee of 5/75 still applied. Upper and lower edge tears, repaired internally with tape, otherwise fine and scarce, the subject of an article in Spring 2024 E.A.S.C Bulletin. Photo on Page 202. (Image1)
