BLACK OVERPRINT: 'H.' on QV Perkins Bacon Large Star Wmk Irregular Compound Perf 11½-12½x11½-12½x10x11½-12½ 4d deep purple, extensive thinning but of fine facial appearance, light indistinct cds. Unlisted by Ron Butler and the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. Ex Don Pearce: sold for $2635 (Sale 247 Lot 378). At page 99, Ron Butler states "Only local correspondence was envisaged and there was only one denomination [the 2d]". However, he provides no authority for either assertion. In any event, 4d was for double-rate domestic letters, so allocation of 4d stamps should not be surprising. (Image1)
