POSTAL HISTORY: 1933 (April 14) airmail to England endorsed "Saigon-Marseilles Air Service" with KGV 20c purple & sage-green and $3 green & dull purple (Cat £255+ on cover) tied by two very fine strikes of 'HONG-KONG/AIR MAIL' cds cancels, a couple of very minor closed edge tears not affecting the adhesives or markings. Acceptances for mail to and from Great Britain on the Air Orient service bagan from October 1932, with the rate from Hong Kong set at $1.60 per ½oz. Mail was carried by sea to Saigon, air to Marseilles, and air & rail to London. The rate was reduced to $1.36 per ½oz from June 1933. The Imperial Airways service via Singapore did not commence until 1934, with a feeder service to Hong Kong via Penang providing all-the-way airmail service from 1936. Ex Graham Hayward. (Image1)

POSTAL HISTORY: 1938 (Oct 14) usage of P&O SS 'Rajputana' India Mail & Passenger Service picture postcard airmail to Australia with KGVI 10c violet solo tied by 'VICTORIA' cds cancel for the Empire Airmail Scheme postcard rate. EAMS was extended to Australia from August 1938, providing airmail service at surface mail rates, and withdrawn on the outbreak of World War II in September 1939.
