Australian convict cap circa 1803-1820 from Port Arthur, Tasmania, clearly marked inside with Broad arrow & "BO" (Board of Ordnance). In 1819 when asked whether the leather caps were serviceable Major George Druitt (first superintendant of convicts at Hyde Park Barracks) replied "They are quite useless, and afford no protection to the head from the sun". Despite Druitt's criticism the leather caps remained part of the convict uniform at least into the 1850s. Loved or hated, serviceable or useless, the eccentrically shaped leather cap is an evocative reminder of our convict past. Ex Allan Pease collection. (Image1)

Gardiner-Hall Gang Convict document for Alex Fordyce who participated in the 1862 Eugowra Gold Escort Robbery (Australia's largest ever gold robbery). Gardiner-Hall Gang Four paintings of the Ben Hall Gang painted by Rose Rothery at Cliefden, NSW, where the Rothery family were held hostage there in 1863 (her ancestors). Rose Rothery painted Ben Hall, Johnny Dunn, John Vane & Johnny Gilbert, all wearing decent gentlemen's clothing. These are the only actual portraits known of the Gardiner-Hall Gang.
