EARLIEST RECORDED DATE: ½d pale green ACSC 65 (SG 48) horizontal pair with clear Melbourne '29DE17' machine cancel being the earliest recorded date of use, both units with minor bends, the right-hand unit with a small shallow thin. The ACSC gives the date of issue as "4 January 1918 (in Sydney)."
FIRST DAY OF ISSUE: ½d green ACSC 65 (SG 48) horizontal pair with clear Elizabeth Street, Melbourne '-4JAN18' machine cancel being the First Day of Issue (in Sydney). The ACSC does not list any known First Day Cover.
½d green Thin Paper ACSC 65ac horizontal pair, exceptionally well-centred, the left-hand unit with a small hinge remainder, the right-hand unit with minor gum disturbance, Cat $550+ for two singles. The ACSC states that "The Thin Paper variety (less than 0.07mm with gum) is found from Electros 6 and 7".
½d green with Double Perforations at Top & Sides ACSC 65b marginal horizontal strip of 3 from the upper-left corner of the sheet, the left margin incomplete at base, small hinge remainders in the margins only, the stamps all unmounted, Cat $825+ for three singles. Comb machines perforated three sides of all stamps in each row. The doubling at the top is obvious but the vertical perfs are virtually coincident. However, the doubling shows clearly under magnification.
½d green ACSC 65 (SG 48) Coil Join Pair being the sixth & seventh units in a vertical strip of 12, the sixth unit with Kangaroo's Feet White [Pos 6R58] and lower margin & 'Jubilee Line' attached to the unit below, characteristic slightly trimmed perfs at right, the bottom unit & the top two units (minor blemishes) folded under for display, unmounted except for the join, Cat $170+ for unmounted singles (the Coil Join Pair unlisted in the ACSC). Plated as Pos 6R28/.../58 & 6L4/.../34. The ACSC states (p22) that "While coil joins of undoubted authenticity exist for these stamps [½d 1d & 1½d values] ... there is no certain way to expertise such pieces. Consquently, they are not listed." However, coil rolls were created from splitting sheet stock (12x10) vertically & then joining the strips together. Therefore, a genuine vertical strip of 12 must be from a coil.
PUNCTURED 'OS/NSW': ½d green with the Perfin Inverted, quite well centred, partial 'NEWTOW[N]/ [NSW' (?) cds at base, a few tiny aging marks on a couple of upper perf tips.

½d green with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Face & Neck [Pos 5L46] ACSC 65(5)ka (SG 48c), well-centred, small hinge remainder, Cat $550 (£350). This is an early state of the ACSC 'Second State', with the crack through the Kangaroo's face & neck presenting as a thin white line only.
The ACSC comments in footnote 2 that "Only the second state of the variety is found on Large Multiple Watermark paper". This is a little misleading: the crack expanded greatly over time, beginning on Single Watermark paper as a small 'tear-drop' below the lower-right wattle bloom (see Lots 86 & 87), then extending up to the top frame and down to the oval above 'AUSTRALIA' (as in Lot 88). Later it extends down to the Kangaroo's nose & neck (as here), and finally splits the Kangaroo's face completely and continues to its forearm (see Lot 186) and back (see Lot 188) also causing the oval above 'AU' of 'AUSTRALIA' to bulge and join the letters (see Lot 187 etc). All the Large Multiple Watermark examples seen (except perhaps Lot 225 below) show the crack extending to the Kangaroo, but the degree to which it does so varies considerably. It also appears that the unit was repaired at some point, possibly more than once (see Lots 190-193), until finally replaced by a Substituted Cliché (see Lot 194). For examples of the Cracked Electro & Substituted Cliché included in monogram blocks & complete sheets see Lots 212-216, 221, 224 and 227 below.
½d emerald with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Face & Neck [Pos 5L46] ACSC 65(5)ka (SG 48c), quite well-centred, a few 'fluffy' perfs, light gum disturbance, Cat $550 (£350). The crack through the Kangaroo's face & neck is now up to 0.5mm wide and the oval above the 'AU' of 'AUSTRALIA' is noticeably thickened.

Andrew Johnston described this and the next three Lots as previously-unrecorded repairs and we agree with this assessment. While the thin 'tear drop' crack from the lower-right wattle bloom is reminiscent of the very early 'First State', the still-extensive cracks through the Kangaroo confirm these to be a later state as such cracks do not exist in 'First State'. But the previously evident crack from the Left Wattles past 'AU' of 'AUSTRALIA' to the Kangaroo's ear has largely disappeared, and the only logical explanation is that it was repaired.

Compare this with the pre-retouched example in Lot 187 above - also used in October 1918 - to see the extent of the repair.

½d green with Cracked Electro from Left Frame through Kangaroo & King's Head to Ear (Early State) [Pos 5R26] ACSC 65(5)o, quite well-centred, light bend at upper-right and a couple of short or uneven perfs, indistinct 'AU26/1918' cancel largely clear of the variety, undercatalogued at $50. Andrew Johnston was able to locate only six examples of this Cracked Electro - three used & three mint including one in a complete sheet (see Lot 215) - in three distinct states. The other Cracked Electro variety from this plate [Pos 5L46] is listed at $550 mint and $650 used; similarly scarce Cracked Electros from other plates are priced at $1500+.

½d green with Retouched Upper Frame at Left and Notch in Upper Right Frame [Pos 5R36] ACSC 85(5)r being the right-hand unit in a marginal horizontal strip of 3 tied by Melbourne '18MY/1920' machine cancel to cover to Healesville, a couple of minor aging marks at base well clear of the stamps & back flap missing, Cat $50 for used (unpriced on cover). The rate was 1d domestic letter plus ½d War Tax.
½d emerald with Thin Fraction at Right [Pos 5R43] ACSC 85(5)s, large-part '[CRONUL]LA BEACH/11NO1918/NSW' cds just clear of the variety, Cat $250. This variety was identified by collectors during the time of printing on Large Multiple Watermark paper, and thus used examples are scarcer than mint. Compare Lot 91 on Single Watermark paper above.
½d green with unlisted variety Cracked Electro from Left Frame behind Kangaroo's Back through Legs and Left Value Tablet to Base [Pos 5L34], lightly mounted. This Cracked Electro variety is not listed in Dix & Rowntree (1995). It has a small scallop in the lower frame below the right value tablet consistent with the same unit in the block offered in the next Lot.
½d yellow-green with unlisted variety Cracked Electro from Left Frame behind Kangaroo's Back through Legs and Left Value Tablet to Base [Pos 5L34] being the fourth unit from the left in the upper row of a marginal block of 12 (6x2) from the left of the sheet with central gutter at right, the unit below being Substituted Cliché (Weak Right Frame) [Pos 5L40], very fine unmounted. The crack has attracted ink and appears as a heavy green line. RPSV Certificate (1989) states "unable to certify cause of apparent variety".
This crack developed after Harrison's substitution of the two units below it in column 4, the lower one previously with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Forearm [Pos 5L46]. It is unclear why the unit in between [Pos 5L40] was substituted as it had not previously displayed any flaws. The position of the newly-developed crack on the same side of the stamp as the previous Cracked Electro from Left Wattles may be a clue: it is conceivable that this earlier crack eventually expanded to affect all three units. See Lot 224 below for a complete sheet with what appears to be a very early stage of this crack. Neither this Cracked Electro variety nor the Substituted Cliché varieties are listed in Dix & Rowntree (1995).
½d emerald with unlisted variety Substituted Cliché (Weak Right Frame) [Pos 5L40] being the left-hand unit in a horizontal pair, quite well-centred, the right-hand unit with a tiny surface mark, small hinge remainder. It appears that this unit was substituted at the same time as the unit below with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Forearm [Pos 5L46]. It is unclear why this was done as this unit has not previously displayed any flaws (see the previous Lot for a potential explanation). For monogram blocks & a complete sheet including this Substituted Cliché see Lots 214, 224 & 227 below.

Harrison removed the Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Forearm cliché after repairs to this unit proved unsatisfactory. The ACSC states that this was done "apparently prior to his first printing", but this is incorrect: see Lot 221 below. The unit above - which had not previously displayed any flaws - was also replaced by a Substituted Cliché with similar Weak Right Frame characteristics (compare the pre-substituted unit's right frame which is highlighted in the image for the previous lot). ½d emerald complete sheet with 'CA' & 'JBC' Monograms ACSC 65(5)z & 65(5)zb, slightly mis-placed guillotining resulting in small parts of both monograms in the upper margin, and all ACSC-listed left-pane varieties including Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Forearm [Pos 5L46] and most right-pane varieties but prior to the appearance of White Flaw on Emu's Leg [Pos 5R22] and Cracked Electro through King's Head [Pos 5R26], characteristic break in the Jubilee Line at right opposite the fourth row, most units are well-centred, light fold through the central gutter & a couple of minor bends in the margins only, unmounted, Cat $4400+ for the monogram corner strips of 3 & listed varieties mounted and 101 unmounted singles. A wonderful 'time-capsule' in the development of the Electro 5 varieties. This is a Cooke printing (evidenced by the 'JBC' monogram), so the Thin Fraction at Right retouch [5R43] carried out by Harrison is also not present.

An important item, especially in the study of the development of the Cracked Electro through King's Head variety.
