ORIGIN OF STAMPS - 1st-YEAR ½d RED NEWSPAPER TAX STAMP ON COMPLETE ISSUE OF 'THE SPECTATOR': Very fine complete 10 Sept. 1712 1-sheet issue of "The SPECTATOR" newspaper (folded to fit neatly on a page with Tax Stamp above the masthead) with a fine complete red "SEMPER EADEM/HALF-PENNY/97" Newspaper Tax Stamp (2 small pin-holes barely noticeable). From 10 Oct. 1825 newspapers with tax stamps travelled free by post; they were in many ways the first postage stamps. British Newspaper Tax Stamps were first introduced only a few weeks before the date of this paper, on 1st Aug. 1712; very few papers with clear examples of 1712 have survived. Fine Exhibition Item. FREE MAIL TO ROBERT WALLACE + WHITING "DRAWING ROOM SCRAP SHEET No.3" WITH BUFF ENGINE-TURNED FRAMES;: Fine 9 Aug. 1838 EL franked ex Glasgow (ds) to "Robert Wallace Esq., M.P., London" with ref. to Postal Reform; "I am delighted with your Post Office labours - they will produce infinite benefit to the country if the Ministry follow them up honestly". Plus mainly fine Oct. 1831 double-page weekly scrap-book insert sheet (227 x 279mm; fits an album-page exactly) printed by Charles Whiting (his "Whiting, Beaufort House" imprint appears at the foot of the second page) with poems etc. on two pages surrounded by attractive brown engine-turned designs very reminiscent of his later Postal Stationery letter-sheet Essays; the backs of those pages have frames printed in blue in which someone has duly glued a print of a girl & of a sozzled boozing couple!). Few Known; in Cavendish's June 2012 auction, lot 926, the similar "No.10" realised £180+BP. [Ex Mike Salmon, 2006.] Cross Reference: SCOTLAND (Image)

LAST DAY FREE FRANKS EX P.M.G. (WITH 9 JAN. 1840 FREE ds) & TO "COLONEL MABERLY" (P.O. SECRETARY): Remarkable pair of 9 Jan. 1840 free fronts sent to and from "Brighton" on the Last Day of Free Franking and the Last Day of the 4d Postage Period. The first to Brighton signed by "Lichfield" (no need for heading or date as he was P.M.G.) with mainly very fine Last Day London crowned 2-ring "FREE" ds of "9 JA 9/1840". The other without postal marks (there would have been a backstamp but mail to P.O. officials never needed a FREE mark) headed from "Brighton" (signature unidentified) addressed to "Colonel Maberly, Lower Berkeley Street, London". Extraordinary - and probably Unique - pair of official P.O. Last Day Free Franks. (2 fronts) Cross Reference: FIRST DAY COVERS, SUSSEX, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, UNIFORM 4d POSTAGE PERIOD (Image)
