image 1840 1d Black, Plate 1a (KI–LL) Exceptional Right-Hand Sheet Marginal Block of Eight with InscriptionA Marvellous Classic ShowpieceA highly desirable multiple, this left-hand sheet marginal block of eight (KI–LL) retains the rare and prized inscription “ards the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the Letter”, a feature of immense philatelic significance. Margins are just touched at lower left, otherwise clear, and each stamp is lightly struck with red Maltese Cross cancellations, adding to the block’s visual appeal. Some pressed creasing is present, typical of large multiples from this period, but it in no way detracts from the block’s marvellous overall appearance. This is a superb display piece, combining rarity, condition, and historical importance.Stanley Gibbons Specialised Catalogue value (as two blocks of four): £48,000++. Provenance: From the renowned Seymour sale 2, 1951, lot 59. Expertise: Certified by the British Philatelic Association (2025). (Image)

image The Largest Recorded Used Block of Plate 6The legendary 1840 1d Black, Plate 6, presented as an extraordinary block of eighteen (positions PA–PL and QA–QF) on a substantial piece of large-format legal correspondence. The upper row PA–PL forms a complete horizontal strip of twelve, an exceptional feature in itself, with the entire multiple securely tied by crisp red Maltese Cross cancellations.Margins are just clear to large all round, an impressive achievement for a multiple of this scale. A light archival fold crosses the piece, entirely consistent with original postal use. Minor imperfections are confined to PG and QE, each showing a tiny closed nick at the foot, and do not detract from the overall striking visual impact. Considering its remarkable size and survival on piece, the condition must be regarded as exceptionally fine. Note: This iconic exhibit item was showcased at the Royal Philatelic Society Centenary Exhibition, May 1940. The second largest used Penny Black multiple known (after the block of 24 in the "Chartwell" collection) and the largest used multiple of plate 6.A truly magnificent and historically important rarity, representing the pinnacle of classic British philately. image A marvellous left mint sheet marginal block of four1840 1d Black, Plate 7 (BA–CB), left mint sheet marginal block of four, printed on experimental thin paper. The stamps display a fresh, rich colour and a fine, sharp impression, clearly showing the constant variety “CA with double C.” The left margin retains the distinct sheet watermark guide lines, adding further desirability and positional interest.Preserved in mint condition with original gum, the lower pair remains never hinged, while only light hinge traces are present on the upper stamps. Overall condition is exceptional for a multiple of this rarity.A magnificent and extremely rare block, seldom encountered in such outstanding quality. Expertise: Accompanied by a British Philatelic Association Certificate (2025). Provenance: Earl of Crawford and "a well known fellow of the RPS" Robson Lowe auction (7 May 1958). (Image)

image THE UNIQUE LARGEST MINT MULTIPLE OF THE PENNY BLACK IN PRIVATE HANDS1840 1d Black, Plate 7 (IA–LF) - The Famous Seymour Block — Mint Marginal Inscriptional Block of Twenty-Four (6 x 4)An extraordinary and historically iconic multiple, this mint marginal block of twenty-four from the left side of the sheet is the largest known Penny Black multiple in private hands. It retains part of the rare sheet inscription: "the labels ABOVE the address and towards the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the letter" — a feature of immense philatelic significance. The block is brilliantly fresh, with excellent margins on the other sides and practically full original gum. Typical of the plate 7 sheet, wrinkling and minor tone spots are noted purely for accuracy and do not detract from the stunning overall appearance.A world-class exhibition icon, combining rarity, scale, condition, and display impact, unquestionably worthy of the finest collection. It is the largest and the mint block extant.Note: The block is the largest part of a sheet known as the Crawford Sheet, broken up. Cat No: 2

image 1840 1d Black, Plate 8 (KA–LC) Block of Six on Fragment, Used A very attractive and rare multiple from Plate 8, positions KA–LC, with clear to good margins (note LA cut into at lower left) and tied on a fragment by orange-red Maltese Cross cancellations. A horizontal crease on the bottom row is noted, typical for multiples of this size and era, but the block retains excellent visual appeal and display quality. Particularly scarce for this plate, this multiple is highly desirable for the advanced collector. Provenance: Ex Robson Lowe sale, 1954. (Image)

image Inscriptional Single on Cover to Ireland1840 1d Black, Plate 8 (TE) Lower Marginal Stamp with partial inscription “abels ABOVE the A” on WrapperAn exceptionally rare and historically fascinating usage, this lower marginal 1d Black from Plate 8 is tied to a wrapper (no sideflaps) from Bridgenorth, 3 February 1841, addressed to Carndonagh, Ireland. The front bears contemporary annotations recording the results of the Walsall election, including the declaration of John Gladstone’s victory, offering both philatelic and historical significance. The wrapper is backstamped Dublin transit, 4 February 1841, and the stamp retains its marginal inscription, an element highly prized by collectors.
