Lot No: 645

Cat No: Collection

image Extensive predominantly used collection on album pages etc with good selections from most States annotated as per Michel, virtually all are genuine but, where used examples are worth significantly more than mint, we can't guarantee the postmarks. Despite that reservation, our general assessment is that this is a well-developed collection with numerous better items throughout & an overall standard far-above what is usually encountered in Australia. We have noted many very fine &/or attractive Classics and a large number of very fine to superb cancellations. Personal inspection will be rewarded. NB: about half the pages have been scanned on our website, to provide guidance to prospective bidders.  (2000 approx?) (Image1)

image POSTAL HISTORY: 1912 (June 12) 'Flugpost am Rhein u Main' postcard to Australia with Airmail 10pf Duck and Germania 10pf both tied by 'Flugpost am Rhein u am Main/Darmstadt/*' cds. Addressed to the Government Geologist at Launceston, Tasmania, the personal message refers to German bank concessions in Nyasaland. The rate was 10pf foreign postcard rate + 10pf airmail surcharge for carriage by either the pioneer Zeppelin airship 'Schwaben' or the aeroplane 'Gelber Hund', raising the possibility that - in addition to being the only recorded example to Australia - this may also be the earliest Zeppelin-flown item known to Australia.

Posted on board Graf Zeppelin on the Munich-Berlin sector of its Germany Round Trip with the hilarious (tongue-in-cheek?) message "I am writing on board the Airship Graf Zeppelin. We had booked for Berlin but have been several trips over Hamburg. Think we are going to land again as we left Captain & II Officer behind. Your loving Daddy". Wonderful personal use by passenger sent to an extremely rare destination for Zeppelin mail.
