KIAUTSCHOU: 1914 Postal Card with Vertical Dividing Line on the Face & Lozenges Watermark 4c carmine Michel P11 (H&G 11), to Tsingtau with very fine strike of the scarce 'LITSUN/KIAUTSCHOU/20.9/14' cds being the Last Day of Use (confirmed by Friedemann), unpriced used in both catalogues. Superb. Helmut Hammer Certificate (1980) states (translated) that it is only the second or third used example recorded; and with the 'LITSUN' cds is "unikat" (= unique). POSTAL HISTORY: 1912 (June 12) 'Flugpost am Rhein u Main' postcard to Australia with Airmail 10pf Duck and Germania 10pf both tied by 'Flugpost am Rhein u am Main/Darmstadt/*' cds. Addressed to the Government Geologist at Launceston, Tasmania, the personal message refers to German bank concessions in Nyasaland. The rate was 10pf foreign postcard rate + 10pf airmail surcharge for carriage by either the pioneer Zeppelin airship 'Schwaben' or the aeroplane 'Gelber Hund', raising the possibility that - in addition to being the only recorded example to Australia - this may also be the earliest Zeppelin-flown item known to Australia.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1930 (June 22) Graf Zeppelin postcard to Australia with Airmail 1Mk Eagle tied 'LUFTSCHIFF/GRAF ZEPPELIN' cds, 'BERLIN C' transit d/s of same day alongside, a couple of tiny corner bends. Posted on board Graf Zeppelin on the Munich-Berlin sector of its Germany Round Trip with the hilarious (tongue-in-cheek?) message "I am writing on board the Airship Graf Zeppelin. We had booked for Berlin but have been several trips over Hamburg. Think we are going to land again as we left Captain & II Officer behind. Your loving Daddy". Wonderful personal use by passenger sent to an extremely rare destination for Zeppelin mail.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1931 (Nov 4) commercial airmail cover endorsed "16" & "bis India", to Dutch Indies with 1926 Eagle Airs10pf 15pf & 1mk tied by Dresden cds, apparently significantly delayed with Batavia arrival b/s of 2.12.31 redirected to Soerabaja (b/s 4.12.1931) then back to Batavia, minor blemishes.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1931 (May 12) large cover (200x130mm) to Australia with 'MIT LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN ZU BEFORDERN' cachet, South America Flight 2Mk Zeppelin tied by 'FRIEDRICHSHAFEN/ (Bodensee)' cds, violet '[castle]/LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN/OSTSEEJAHR-RUNDFAHRT 1931' & red 'MIT LUFTPOST BEFORDERT/LUFTPOSTAMT/BERLIN C2' cachets alongside, 'KOBENHAVN/14.5.31/ LUFTPOST' & 'BERLIN C/15.5.31' transit b/s, Sydney '10JE31' arrival b/s, some aging marks. Carried on Baltic Sea Round Trip back to Berlin and onwards by surface. An extremely rare Zeppelin destination.

A repellant regime but compelling postal history.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1934 PPC airmail to Australia at 65pf rate with 'HAMBURG/7.12.34' roller cancel & Sydney '21DEC/1934' arrival b/s; plus Hamburg-Amerika Linie airmail cover at 1mk30pf rate with 'HAMBURG/6.12.34' cds to Melbourne (b/s). Both carried on Imperial Airways/QANTAS interrupted service IE298, the first to be extended from Singapore to Australia.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1935 (Nov 12) Gottfried Rüppel oversize cover (folded by sender to 345x145mm) registered air to Australia endorsed "752g" weight with Zeppelin 3mk x27 (block of 20 on the face + strip of 7 on the reverse + Hindenburg 10pf), all tied by Bremen roller cancels, Melbourne arrival backstamp and 'CARDED/24NOV.1937/Spencer Street/GPO C1' boxed d/s in violet on face, two stamps badly damaged but some others with minor perf faults, a few aging marks & edge bends. The rate was 580pf letter (between 740-760g) + 50pf per 5g airmail surcharge x150 + 30pf registration fee. This is the record franking on a pre-war airmail cover to Australia.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1935 (Nov 18) Gottfried Rüppel oversize cover (370x140mm) registered air to Australia endorsed "188gr" weight with Lillienthal 2mk x6 & Zeppelin 3mk x3 tied by Bremen cds, Italian TPO and 'DARWIN/30NO35' transits & Melbourne '-3DE35' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. The rate was 160pf letter (between 180-200g) + 50pf per 5g airmail surcharge x38 + 30pf registration. Per Imperial Airways/QANTAS service IE393, delayed in Thailand due to a waterlogged airfield, by train to Bangkok then per Sydney.
