German Colonies: German East Africa: 1889 (Nov. 28) 3pf. stationery wrapper from Munich endorsed “Drucksache” with added 50pf. (3, one overlapping) addressed to “Herrn Lieutenant W. Langheld’/bei der Wissmann-Expedition/in Bagamoyo/via Zanzibar Ostafrica/via Brindisi”. In 1888 Hermann Wissmann was appointed 1st official Reichskommissar for the German East Africa region and tasked with suppression of the Abushiri Revolt. Commanding a mercenary force of mostly Sudanese soldiers from decommissioned units of the Anglo-Egyptian army under the command of German officers including Lieutenant Wilhelm Langheld (1867-1917), Wissmann's forces, with some British naval assistance and their own extremely brutal methods, retook the coastal strip and reopened the main caravan route through the area. An extremely rare historical item. Photo. (Image1)
