POSTAL HISTORY: 1917 (Jan 10) cover endorsed "Tauchbootbrief" (= Submarine Letter) to Michigan with 20pf tied by very fine Stuttgart cds, largely very fine 'BREMEN 1/ T.B. /16.1.17/D.O.R.' cds below, largely superb 'Zuruck/Wegen Einstellung des Tauchboot/briefverkehrs zuruck an Absender' (= Return to sender owing to abandonment of Submarine Letter Service) cachet in violet. The service was scheduled to begin 31.1.1917 but on that date Germany reintroduced the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. On 3.2.1917, America declared war on Germany & the submarine mail service was abandoned. (Image1)
