EXTRAORDINARY "TRAVELLING POST/WHITE NILE" COVER TO GERMAN EAST AFRICA VIA SUDAN; Oct./Nov. 1901 env. ("On Her Britannic Majesty's Service" heading) addressed to the Meteorologist "Herrn. Dr. Carl Uhlig, Dar-es-Salam, D.O.A., German East Africa", franked with vertical pair of Uganda QV 1a reds tied by very fine dotted diamond "Retta" cancels, having a partly fine large "TRAVELLING POST/WHITE NILE" cds (30 Nov.) on the front, along with blue crayon "5" marking, and fair to fine backstamps of Khartoum (10 Dec.), Amb Beni Souef-Caire (16 Dec.), Aden (23 Dec.) and Dar es Salaam (10 Jan. 1902). Presumably this cover was sent from the most northerly area of Uganda (around Gondokoro), possibly from Dufile or Wadelai; it is very similar to the famous "GONDOKORO/PQST OFFICE" covers, and sent by the same Nile route. This unusual routing to Dar es Salaam via Cairo & Aden may have been due to concerns over mail security during the Boer War period. [Ex Sotheby's 2 Apr. 1987 auction, when it was featured on the front cover of the catalogue. Ex Cavendish June 2004, Peter Chantry Collection; lot 430, realised £1,600+BP] Cross Reference: GERMAN COLONIES (Image)
