Semmes served in the U.S. Navy from 1826 to 1860. During the Civil War he was captain of the cruiser C.S.S. Alabama, the most successful commerce raider in maritime history, taking 65 prizes. Late in the war, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and also served briefly as a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army, though his arrangement to hold that rank, from April 5 to April 26, 1865, was never submitted to, nor officially confirmed by, the Confederate Senate.
