#65 3c Rose on Civil War Cover To Sgt. Henry H. Nason, 47th Massachusetts Possible Prisoner of War Menu on Reverse
Stamp tied by March 17 circular datestamp on cover addressed to Sgt. Henry H. Mason, Co. A, 47th Massachusetts Regiment, Gen. Banks’ Division, New Orleans, Louisiana. Pencil notation on reverse listing a nine-day menu: Sunday beef soup, Monday baked beans, Tuesday roast beef, Wednesday pea soup, Thursday rice, Friday baked beans, Saturday beef soup, Sunday beef soup, Monday pea soup.
This menu suggests a frugal fare unlikely to reflect the normal diet of Company A, 47th Massachusetts Regiment, to which Sgt. Henry Nason belonged, but more consistent with the diet received by enemy prisoners, even in well supplied occupation areas of the South.
Prisoners in New Orleans were housed from December 1863 to July 1865 in the New Orleans Customs House above the post office, with additional homes used for officer prisoners. Records state that 235 Confederate prisoners died while in the hands of the men of General Banks’ Division in the city.
Civil War Stampless Soldier's Letter, South Carolina Reserves, Due 10 Manuscript "Green Pond SC Mar 30 1864 Due 10" manuscript at the top right, addressed to Mrs. J. A. Woodruff, Abbeville CH, So. Ca. Endorsed at top left "Soldiers Letter SCR Palmetto Arty (South Carolina Reserves)." Toр edge wear but still a very clean cover. Certificate: PF 616510 (Image)
