RED OVERPRINT: 'C.Sgn.' (hybrid overprint with Block 'C.S' & Seriffed 'gn') on QV Perkins Bacon Large Star Wmk Rouletted 2d vermilion SG DO161a, rouletting Grossly Misplaced Horizontally through the stamp so cut from the sheet on all sides to largely preserve the design, ironed-out crease towards the base, very fine GPO cds of 'AU26/68', Cat £1250. Unlisted by Ron Butler & only two other examples recorded so it should be rated RRRRR. Ex 'Sir Humphrey' (Brian Farmer): sold for $2680 (Sale 118 Lot 254) Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2010) states "Great rarity - only example known to me". Don Pearce's example - a bit oxidised, also graded 'B' - sold for $2155 (Sale 247 Lot 115). [Date range 26.8.1868 to 16.9.1868]
Ron Butler records the hybrid overprint only in black, and only on the De La Rue Rouletted 2d: see Lots 229 & 230. This caused him to assert that it appeared in the 1870s and was therefore 'Type II', as it is now listed by Gibbons. However, the discovery of this Perkins Bacon stamp and the similar 6d in Lot 225 suggests that both overprint variants were probably on the same sheet, and therefore were issued at the same time. The extreme rarity of these stamps might indicate that the hybrid overprint occurred on only one position in the forme, in which case it was probably an error by the typesetter. (Image1)
