1945 (Nov 27) usage of South East Asia Command illustrated 'XMAS AIR LETTER' showing Santa in a turban and his sleigh drawn by oxen in front of a mosque, lengthy message from LAC Peter Ansell headed "The Cocos Isles" begins "This is about the last letter I shall be writing from these Islands; in a few hours time I shall be flying up to Ceylon in a Liberator ...", to Essex UK with an unusually very fine complete 'RAFPOST 301/27NOV45' Indian-Pattern cds applied on the reverse (as there was no blank space on front), small closed tear at top on opening otherwise very fine. The RAFPOST 301 cds was used at the heavy bomber airfield constructed by the RAF on Brown's West Island and is notorious for being poorly struck: this is about as fine as it comes. Colin Riddell's similar example - with a short greetings message & fine strike only; minor defects - sold at our auction of 3.3.2019 for $2360 (Sale 233 Lot 2458). (Image1)
