The message written in German from a POW who requests tobacco & old newspapers in German English or French & states papers from neutral territories (as was China) are permitted. 1918 (May 29) large bank envelope (187x125mm) with wax seals on reverse endorsed for insured mail on the face, to Tientsin from the Russian Post Office at Kashgar, Sinkiang with unoverprinted Russia Arms 50k block of 10 (2x5) and 70k pair tied by fine to very fine strikes of the Cyrillic cds cancel with another very fine strike alongside, some paper 'cracking' & resultant faults clear of the stamps & markings. Kashgar is one of the western-most cities in China, located in Sinkiang Province near the border with present-day Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For over 2,000 years, Kashgar was an important stopping-place on the Silk Road between China, the Middle East, and Europe. The Russian railway network across Siberia, Manchuria and Central Asia offered an expeditious service to and from Sinkiang. All Russian post offices in the province were closed in October 1920.
