Captain George Swinton Tulloh was taken prisoner by the Boers at Ladysmith in -.11.1899 & released after the British captured Pretoria on 5.6.1900. image 1900 (Nov 30) usage of 5c Letter Card to Holland with 3c pair & 5c tied by 'DIYATALAWA CAMP/DE3/00' cds & huge Camp censor cachet in violet, 'AMSTERDAM/23/DEC/00' arrival backstamp, no fewer than nine different postmen's handstamps and very fine strike of the marvellous 'Informatie Burg Stand/Amsterdam-Vruchteloo' (= ...fruitless search), boxed 'INCONNU' (unknown) & superb unframed 'REBUT' (return) handstamps, 'AMSTERDAM-ANTWERP/10/JAN/01' TPO & 'COLOMBO/MR5/RETURNED-LETTER- OFFICE' cds (no year) backstamps, a couple of very minor blemishes. A wonderful item. The letter within dated 30.11.1900 & signed "Dr JD Koster" states - translated - "...[our camp newspaper] ceased to exist after three issues. As it poked fun at politics, it was not very popular with the heads of the camp..." Koster was a medical doctor who had served with a Dutch ambulance unit in South Africa. He was paroled to provide medical services in the Kandy area. See also Lot 3313. (Image1)

image 1901 (Jan 14) irregular usage of Ceylon 6c Postal Card to England with Indian 1a purple-brown tied by Indian 'ROYAPETTAH/17JA01' cds (a suburb of Madras), the message headed "Trincomalee/Ceylon/14th Jan 1901" states "...I shall land in Madras...Four prisoners escaped off the Catalonia just after I left it, which was very lucky because [I avoided being] court-martialled with the rest". The incident occurred on 13.1.1901 (the day before this card was written) in Colombo Harbour, where five POWs arriving from the Cape managed to swim to a Russian vessel which took them on board & carried them to Europe where they were feted as heroes. This is believed to be the only postal article with a direct connection to the escape. (Image1)

The fancy cachet unrecorded by Ted Proud: Richard Stroud noted "several examples" between 26.12.1900 & 8.1.1902, a period of only 13 days. image 1902 (Feb 20) cover from the Transvaal to "Welikada Convict Est/Colombo", Colombo arrival backstamp of MR11/02, very minor flap-damage. Addressed to JF Bothma who, with Theophilus John Curran, was co-editor of the handwritten jail newspaper 'The Welikada Justice'. Bothma was a persistent escapee who, after several incidents, was confined to Welikada. Ironically, he ended up in the Urugas Peace Camp. See 'Prisoners of the Boer War in Ceylon & the Dutch East Indies' by Brohier & Woodruff (2015) pages 159-162. (Image1)

image 1902 (July 2) cover to "Simla/India" with 5c (defective) tied by very fine 'RAGAMA CAMP' cds, 'SIMLA/9JL02' arrival backstamp, light toning. With the enclosed letter headed "1st Glouc Regt/Ceylon" to the writer's sister in which he states "...There's a prison within a mile of this camp where all native convicts undergoing long sentences are sent to. A few days ago 75 of them suddenly rushed the warders with crowbars & pickaxes. 2 were shot dead & several wounded...there are still about 30 of them loose..." Mail from the British Forces camp guards is rare, this being greatly enhanced for including such a topical letter. (2 items) (Image1)

image 1902 (Nov 13) uncensored cover with 2c & 3c tied by Colombo cds to the reverse, to "GJ Theron Esq (!) POW/Hut No 58/The Camp/Diyatalawa", very fine. On 31.5.1902, signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging formally ended the Second Boer War. In Ceylon, censorship ended on 17.7.1902 & most of the POWs were released, the majority returning to South Africa, while others chose to move to the Dutch East Indies. A small number of "Irreconcilables", the hold-outs who refused to sign an Oath of Allegiance to King Edward VII, remained in custody. On 24.9.1903, the final five remaining POWs were released to various parts of Ceylon. (Image1)
