image image Burma, Nearly Complete Mint Collection in Stockbooks, 1873-1984, Two stockbooks with a neatly assembled, almost entirely mint collection and nearly complete. Beginning with a few stamps of India used in Burma, such as #51 in Mupon and #75 in Manpwe and continuing with what seems to be a complete collection of mint from 1938-80 including 18A-33 in both singles & blocks. The second volume has nearly complete mint officials to 1968 including O1-14, O15-27, 043-55, 080 (block), and highly complete Japanese Occupation with over 40 peacock overprints, the Yano Seal in a pair, about 20 examples of the 1942 Surcharges, the Burma State Government Crest stamp both perf & imperf, and a complete set of the stamps for use only in the Shan States (2N51-57). A rare opportunity to corral almost all the Burmese stamps with one lift of the paddle (or one click of the mouse, depending where you are!), generally Fine to Very Fine, viewable in its entirety. Sale No: 47
Lot No: 3579

Cat No: 66

image image 1891, Queen Victoria Jubilee, 2¢ carmine, First Day Cover (Scott 66. 2012 Yang C1), vertical strip of three plus single, tied by B62 killers plus cleanly struck "Hong Kong/A/JA 22/91" postmark, on Registered cover to Henry Hechler [Stamp & Coin Dealer and Philatelic Publisher], Halifax, N.S., Canada; "R"-in-circle Registry handstamp plus blue and red Registry numbers on front, reverse with violet "Registered/Feb 14 1891/San Francisco, Cal." and black St. John N.B. (Feb. 23) transits plus Feb. 24 Halifax receiver, along with Canadian "D"-in-circle Due marking dated Feb. 20; two adhesives missing at upper left, the remaining stamps bright, the cover lightly toned but otherwise sound, Fine to Very Fine. One of only a small number known, with 2025 R.P.S.L. certificate. 2012 Yang HK$250,000.

According to the 2012 Yang catalogue, "less than 10x [First Day Covers] were recorded", while Chan (The 1891 Jubilee Overprint of Hong Kong, 1997, p. 45) states, "[o]nly about eight covers are known", echoing the figure given in Webb. Gurevitch (Queen Victoria Postal Adhesives Vol. 2, 2001, p. A171) provides a detailed listing of First Day Covers, recording eight local covers (seven solo uses, one with eight stamps) and four to Colchester, England (three with seven stamps, one with four). A cover to Pennsylvania, with additional 5c Crown CA single, oddly is not also noted as a First Day Cover despite its Jan. 22 postmark.

The stamp's issuance sparked great interest, its print run of 50,000 selling out in just three days despite quantities being limited to 25 stamps per person for the first hour, and 20 stamps thereafter. Webb notes, "There were unruly scenes at the sales counter, and even bloodshed. Two Portuguese were crushed to death in the mob, a Dutch sailor was stabbed to death, and others were injured." (The Philatelic and Postal History of Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports of China and Japan, p. 18.)

While we do not condone physical violence, we strongly encourage robust and serious bidding for this world-class rarity!
