image POSTAL HISTORY: 1906 German PPC of Ruandan natives & their hut with the message in French headed "Luvungi le 27 juin 1906" (in the Congo Free State) & signed by the Belgian sender "lieut comt la column de la Ruzizi-Kivu", to Belgium with DEA 2½h & 7½h tied by 'USUMBURA/DEUTSCHE-/OSTAFRIKA/4 7/06' cds, similar 'DAR-ES-SALAAM/27 8/06' transit, Belgian 'NAMUR STATION/18/SEPT/1906' arrival & redirected to 'OSTENDE' with light postman's delivery handstamp, minor blemishes. 3½ month transit, of which it took one week down the Ruzizi River to reach the nearest DEA post office, at the head of Lake Tanganyika; then by lake steamer to Kigoma; and then by the difficult overland route via Tabora to the Indian Ocean, exactly two months after being written. Presumably, this was still quicker than sending west to the Atlantic. (Image1)
