AEROGRAMMES: 1942 black/white British Forces 'AIR MAIL/LETTER CARD' with letter headed "RAF/Bahrain Islands/Persian Gulf/PAIFORCE/Oct 30 1942", to England with boxed 'RAF/CENSOR/752' and GB 3d tied as usual by 'EGYPT/10NO42/POSTAGE/PREPAID' machine, 'CALLOW/8DE/42/HEREFORD' arrival backstamp. Transit 11 days to Cairo plus 28 days to England, suggesting carriage was wholly by surface. The writer states "I have moved to another part of the island, which makes it a bit difficult in getting to church ...". Persia & Iraq Force (PAIFORCE) was operational in Iraq from 1942. The writer speaks of having had a lengthy illness and suffered significant weight-loss "...seems the war has put more demands on this refinery..." Usage of the Overprints on Aerogrammes is much scarcer than on envelopes. Awali is an oil-producing area on Bahrain Island that was established in the 1930s by the Bahrein Petroleum Co. (Image1)
