Cat No: adams john quincy
John Quincy Adams, free frank on folded cover, undated, addressed to "John Marston Esq. Taunton" (Mass.) in Adams' hand, Extremely Fine.
John Quincy Adams had free franking privileges from his days as Secretary of State in 1817 through his death in 1848. The recipient is most likely John Marston Jr. (1756-1846) who died in Taunton in 1846 at the age of 90, and there are letters from him to Adams online. There is a remote chance this could be John Marston III (1795-1885) who served as a messenger during the War of 1812 and carried the first news of the capture of HMS Guerriere to former President John Adams at Quincy, Mass., So there were relationships between fathers and sons.(Image)
