GEN. DOUGLAS MacARTHUR Typed 4-page letter on General Headquarters letterhead, dated 17 April 1950 and addressed to Mrs. E. Daniel O'Connell of Sharon, Conn., MacArthur begins an explanation for his refusal to grant permission for Margaret Sanger to visit Occupied Japan, in order "to lecture on birth control," he received both praise and backlash for this 1949 decision from those involved in the family planning and abortion debate, however in this letter he explains how American influence over an occupied foreign land was his main concern: "I have yielded to pressure from neither the group in advocacy nor that in opposition to birth control, but have consistently and publicly taken the position that the subject matter is a social problem for solution by the Japanese people themselves without interference, directly or indirectly, by the Allied Powers." There is a similar letter in the Sanger Papers, and one dated a month earlier sold at a 2004 Christie's auction for $5378; interesting historical window into MacArthur's thoughts on an issue that is still relevant today; He signed in ink "Douglas Mac Arthur," also included is the original envelope with Army Post Office cancel, tying 1¢ and 5¢ Prexies, General HQ corner card and red "Air Mail" handstamp, VF (Image)

STAMP ART (3) Sheets of (100) diff stamp-like labels, one in dark red, two in dark green; produced by American modern artist Robert Watts, associated w/ the Fluxus art movement; these sheets are from the 1963 issue YAMFLUG 5/POST/5 (he produced different stamp sheets from 1961-1986); each stamp with various portraits of persons from diff time periods w/ focus on costumes, hairstyles & facial expressions; similar to "pop art" these stamp art pieces may be found at MoMA & other national art museums; these sheets were discovered by the consignor in a mint sheet file along with Christmas Seals, so the condition is not perfect; they are gummed & perforated w/ all selvage intact, however there are several small perf seps on the green sheets as well as one tear, the red sheet has hardly any separations, easily repaired for display; full sets or less common Watts stamp art typically sell for $1,000+; F-VF (Image)
