Singapore/Australia 1945 x 3 covers: 1) post WWII stampless manilla cover to NZ, canc (on front), fine Singapore cds 18 SP 1945 & (on back) fine Australian boxed machine d/s "PASSED FREE / SURFACE POSTAGE" 24 OCT 1945 & Queenstown, NZ cds 17 NO 45. For a short period after the end of the Japanese occupation of Singapore on 2 Sept 1945, surface mail up to 1oz could be posted free (17 Sept - 18 Oct 1945 only). The Australian marking was used especially for this purpose as an arrival cancel, to clarify that no postage due was payable. Still with brief letter (in perfect English) from a Chinese Singaporean who had lived through the occupation. 2) Cover franked 8c GVI "BMA MALAYA" ovpt with follow-up long letter dated 23 JA 46, describes his (harrowing) experiences in some detail. This letter is written on the back of unused Japanese official forms. 3) 1942 censored cover (ex same correspondence) canc Singapore cds 7 FEB 1942 (just 5 days before Japanese occupation on 12 Feb!) Still with original letter (dated 19 Jan 1942), referring to "the present difficulties" & stating "we are safe & sound in spite of the daylight raid by the Japanese planes".
