image Social history exhibit 'Aubrey Gotley and the First A.N.A.R.E. Antarctic Base, Heard Island, 1947-1955', including a marvellous group of mostly original official photographs of the 14-man first party including Stuart Campbell and Aub Gotley (leader for 14 months), landing stores & equipment including a generator & a 'Walrus' plane (later destroyed in a storm), numerous radio message forms that convey the human side of the Expedition and some telegrams, the covers include genuine social mail from Heardites to their families, a rare 1d naval rate cover from an officer on the 'Labuan', one of only two known covers with the accompanying letter from HMAS 'Australia' during the 1950 medical evacuation, and two covers from Gotley's fiancée to him care of ANARE HQ in Melbourne, also Gotley's original typed speech when he handed-over, newspaper articles & other ephemera. image 1961 Mawson Expedition Anniversary 5d SG 7 imperforate die proof on ungummed unwatermarked white wove paper (35x40mm) removed from a presentation frame ACSC 368DP(1), Cat $2500. RPSL Certificate (1980) states "proof of unknown origin probably prepared for presentation purposes". The ACSC states that ten such proofs were prepared mounted in sunken frames, of which one is in the Royal Collection. A wonderful item for the Polar collector. (Image1)

ANTARCTIC TERR.' cds cancel on the first day of availability of the stamp at Mawson Base and autographed by Bob Dingle (Weather Observer), Bob Dovers (Surveyor & Officer-in-Charge), Jeff Gleadell (Cook), Bill Harvey (Carpenter), Lem Macey (Technical Superintendent), John Russell (Engineer), Georges Schwartz (French Observer & Dog Attendant), Bruce Stinear (Geologist), Bill Storer (Radio Operator) & Bob Summers (Medical Officer) comprising all 10 members of the first expeditionery party to over-winter at Mawson Base, a couple of trivial corner bumps otherwise very fine. image POSTAL HISTORY: 1954 (Feb 15) usage of Danish formular aerogramme to Denmark with a short greetings message inside and Australia KGVI 7½d blue tied by largely very fine 'MAWSON/A.N.A.R.E./15FE54/ AUST-ANTARCTIC TERR' cds cancel, taxed with Melbourne 'T/"15"c' octagonal handstamp, on arrival rated "45" on blue pencil and Danish Postage Dues 5o green & 10o orange x4 including a strip of 3 affixed on the face tied by three very fine 'RODBY/-6.4.54' cds cancels. The Australian aerogramme rate applied from the AAT, and this was increased from 7d to 10d on 1.8.1952. (Image1)
