1919-20 England-Australia Ross & Keith Smith Flight 'FIRST/AERIAL POST' vignette (minor perf faults at base) tied by one of two largely very fine strikes of 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26FEB1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' double-oval datestamp AAMC 27 to The "War Chest" Fund NSW Divison ACF envelope addressed to "Mrs WP Chapman, Bishopsgate St, Singleton, N.S.Wales, Australia" signed "J Bennett, Darwin, 12 12 19" on the reverse, roughly opened at right just impacting one the the datestamps, small part back flap missing & a few folds not affecting the vignette, Cat $5000. The enclosed letter in pencil headed "Officers Mess, General Headquarters, Bagdad, 11th January 1919" begins "Just a note in haste which will reach you by Hanley [sic] Page aeroplane ..." [Brigadier General ND MacEwen uplifted mail addressed to Australia from the Australian Wireless Squadron at Baghdad, Iraq in the Handley Page 'Old Carthusian' in January 1919, subsequently handing this to Ross Smith for carriage on the Vickers Vimy flight]. Listed by Tom Frommer as cover 54 in his handbook. A cover endorsed "OAS" in fine condition - without enclosure - sold at our auction of 24.9.2025 for $6000 (Sale 261 Lot 2330). (Image1)

Cat No: 220
1919-20 England-Australia Ross & Keith Smith Flight (Nov 12) intermediate from India with a very fine example of the Ross Smith vignette applied on arrival, both the vignette and Indian ½a & 1a tied by two of three very fine to superb strikes of the double-oval 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26FEB1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' datestamp, faint three-line 'PER/VICKERS VIMY AEROPLANE/TO AUSTRALIA' cachet in blue and with bold autograph of "Keith Smith", minor blemishes mostly on the reverse, AAMC 12a, Cat "from $5750".
Tom Frommer in 'The Ross Smith Stamp & Its Postal History' records only 14 of the 364 covers carried as having originated at Calcutta. This cover is Frommer #220, addressed to "Mrs McPherson/11 Epsom Rd/Ascot Vale" and illustrated by him at page 64. Frommer also notes that fewer than half of the flown covers bear the Vimy cachet and that only 23 were signed by Keith Smith. Our check reveals that only one other cover from India bore Indian stamps and only one other was signed. This is therefore the only cover with both Indian stamps and a pilot's signature. (Image1)

FIVE SHILLINGS: 5/- Coronation Robes on Thick Paper ACSC J7 (SG J7) complete sheet of 80 comprising upper and lower panes of 40 (10x4) with imprint and both Perf Pip blocks of 4, missing the No Stop after 'F ' and No Stop after 'O ' but including the '13' for 'B' variety #J7f, remarkably well-centred for this issue, some small areas of toning in the margins and we noted one stamp with a tonespot, folded in the gutter & some minor perf separation in the margins, generally very fine to superb unmounted, Cat $23,750+ for singles plus the imprint and perf pip blocks (£12,000+ for singles). The only complete sheet we have seen of either printing. Sybrand Bakker's unmounted Thin Paper block of 32 (8x4; no imprint) from the lower pane - stated there to be "By far the largest 5/- block we have seen" - sold in 2013 for $5125 (Sale 184 Lot 1583).
The ACSC states that the position of the '13' variety on the forme has not been identified. We can now confirm that it is [Lower Pane 1/3]. The ACSC also lists the three varieties mentioned above for the Thin Paper printing but David Adams believed that they had been corrected by then. Sybrand Bakker's block of 32 showed corrections to the '13' and Missing Stop after 'O ' varieties. If they do exist, at least they should be worth a lot more than on the Thick Paper stamps (not less, as is currently the case). Unless someone can produce examples of #J8d e & f, we suggest that they should be deleted (Image1)

PENNY WITH OVERPRINT IN BLACK: 1d in Black with Major Variety 'P.C.O.F.' ACSC J2PP(2)Ad tied to small piece by 'AUST ARMY PO/ 241. ' cds used at BCOF HQ at Kure, undercatalogued at $1250 mint; unpriced used. Absent from Sybrand Bakker's collection.
The PCOF error occurred only on the first setting of the trial printings of the 1d & 3d in black. It would have also occurred on the first printing in black on the ½d but because these stamps are essentially identical to the issued ½d the trial printing is not listed. A ½d with 'P.C.OF.' must be from the trial printings. (Image1)
