1919-20 England-Australia Ross & Keith Smith Flight cover addressed in Ross Smith's handwriting to "Mrs Hill, Bellevue House, Bellevue, Queensland" with enclosed letter written & signed by him on Bellevue House notepaper, a very fine well-centred example of the 'FIRST/AERIAL POST/ENGLAND-/AUSTRALIA' flight vignette tied by one of two very fine strikes of the large double-oval 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/ 26FEB1920/ GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' datestamp, a couple of tiny trivial blemishes otherwise superb, AAMC 27a, Cat $5750+ (2008).
This was the first completed flight from England to Australia, winning the £10,000 prize offered by the Australian Government for the first aviator(s) to achieve this epic feat, that today we take for granted. Tom Frommer (2011) identifies 364 covers from the flight, of which this is FR# 202 and illustrated by him at page 60. Most originated in England but significant numbers were uplifted at several intermediate points. However, only a dozen (12) were added after their arrival in Australia while making their way to Melbourne to claim the prize. No covers are recorded signed by Ross Smith; of the 21 covers known addressed by him, Frommer lists only three others containing letters written by him [in an apparent oversight, this cover is not listed with those addressed by Ross Smith on page 16, but is so described in the main tabulation].
The Smith Brothers' Vickers Vimy reached Darwin on 10.12.1919, then proceded on a 'Victory Lap' around Australia. This was interrupted when the Vimy's port engine exploded at 900m altitude requiring an emergency landing at Charleville (Qld). The engine and propellor were repaired at the Ipswich Railway Workshops. Ross Smith had presumably visited Bellevue House, and taken with him the notepaper on which this letter is written; it reads in part "... writing this at Charleville on Feb 10th. It is just a week since we came back from Ipswich and we have got our machine almost ready to start off for Sydney. Rain delayed us for 3 days otherwise we should be in Sydney now". In 1884, James Taylor MLA purchased Bellevue House for his son Con; after Con passed away in 1899, his widow Edith married Charles Lumley Hill, also an MLA and owner of various cattle properties throughout North Australia. Together, they built Bellevue House into the social centre of the district, the hostess Edith Hill being the Mrs Hill to whom this letter is addressed. Later in 1920, Bellevue House hosted HRH Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, during a Royal Visit to Australia. (Image1)
