On 11.3.1917, the Indian Expeditionary Force D occupied Baghdad and Basra. The Indian civil Post Office re-opened in September. Turkish stamps overpinted 'IRAQ' were meant to be used. However, due to short supply the PO used left-over stock of Indian stamps, the use of which continued until -.9.1918. Salaya was a small town in the princely state of Nawanagar of around 4000 people, fewer than 10% of whom were Hindu, like the recipient. (Image1)

On 14.8.1947, India was partitioned and the Dubai postal service was ceded to Pakistan. Bandar Abbas is on the Persian coast, about 240km NNW of Dubai. [Fun fact, Wikipedia advises that it would take 37 hours to drive the 2700km between the two ports. Good to know. They say nothing about potential hazards] (Image1)

Ex Dr William Wells. Following the Partition of India & Pakistan, the overprinted stamps were available for use from -.10.1947 until 31.03.1948. On 1.4.1948, control was ceded to the London GPO! Donaldson states that Dubai covers franked with 'PAKISTAN' overprints are rare. A similar cover of lesser quality sold at our auction of 11.07.2008 for $780 (Sale 137 Lot 957) (Image1)

image DUBAI: 1948 (May 5) commercial airmail usage of Indian 1½a+3a Registration Envelope overprinted 'PAKISTAN', to Melbourne Value Only Overprints on GB KGVI '6/ANNAS' on 6d & '1/RUPEE' on 1/- plus on Silver Wedding '2½/ANNAS' on 2½d pair all tied by good to very fine strikes of the 'DUBAI/5MAY48/+' cds, boxed 'DUBAI/PERSIAN GULF DISTRICT' registration cachet, GPO Sydney transit backstamp, minor characteristic shrinkage evident on the reverse & minor blemishes. The airmail rate was 12a per ½oz x2 + 3a registration = 1r11a. The Pakistan embossed stamp was circled in red to indicate it was wholly invalid, because on 1.4.1948 Dubai's postal arrangements had been transferred to the GPO in London! This is only the second 'PAKISTAN' Registration Envelope recorded used in Dubai. Importantly, it is the only example used after Pakistan frankings became invalid. It is also the only such item franked with Overprints on Great Britain. A fantastic item for the collector of Gulf mail, Indian postal stationery, Pakistan postal history and postal stationery, GB Stamps Used Abroad, and incoming mail to Australia. (Image1)

R Eldon Ellison was the British Consul in Muscat. Outside the Arab world , it is a little-known fact that Guadur, on the Makran Coast of what is now Pakistan, was for many years an Omani enclave. This situation survived the Partition of India and Pakistan and it was only on 8.9.1958 that Oman (reluctantly) ceded Guadur to Pakistan. (Image1)

The Value Only stamps were issued for use in Muscat. According to Gibbons, other usage is known but not from Bahrain.
