Chickamauga, Ga. "If Not Landed in Ten Days". Blue patriotic design with "R.H. Elkins, Co L, 52nd Regt. Iowa Vols." soldier's return address bearing 2¢ Trans-Mississippi (286) tied by "Chickamauga Natl. Park Ga. Jul 10 '98" military duplex with address label to Sioux City, Iowa, original flag patriotic letterhead enclosure with good military content concerning camp, malaria and Gen. Shafter criticism at Santiago "…there is talk of one of the Mississippi Regts. being sent home on account of Malaria…about fifty of one Company was in the Hospital at one time. We are getting better provisions than at first, but the Boys do not think government rations sufficient…The criticism is quite severe among a great many Boys in Camp in regard to General Shafter. It seems to be the general opinion that there was a big blunder made in the handling of the land forces at Santiago in trying to capture that city with so few men. By the time the city is taken, I am afraid most of the Spanish troops will be on there way to Havana. The loss of men on the American side seems to be out of proportion…but with the help of the Navy, the city could be destroyed. We all have reasons for being proud of our Navy, but they cant chase Spaniards over the country, if they could there wouldn't be any Spaniards in sight…", Very Fine. Estimate; $200 - 300.
