1st AFGHAN WAR - EARLY NEWS FROM INDIA OF RANJIT SINGH & THE FALL OF CANDAHAR; 28 May 1839 EL (slight wear to one corner does not detract) from "Nagpore Residency" to Scotland charged "2/6"(?) with v. fine red boxed "NAGPORE/Paid" d.s. on the flap, plus faint red oval Bombay "INDIA" with fine green Falmouth "½" (Scots Mail Tax) both on the front. The long interesting contents give the latest news about the start of the Afghan Campaign and comments on Burma; "Runjeet [Singh - the Sikh ruler; 1780 - 27th June 1839] though a tough old soldier had undermined his constitution by hard drinking... by our last accounts received yesterday (the 23rd) they [the British forces] were within 6 marches of Candahar which they expected to reach in a few days without opposition. There is also a report current that Price Kumuran was moving from Merut to join us... The Burmese are quiet but not asleep - a strong force, that of Aieng is closely watched... Baggage Boats are to be built under the convenience name of Salt Boats... from Australians and Ceylon troops it is said are making for Madrass; all this looks warlike...". An important letter worthy of full transcription. Cross Reference: MILITARY, SCOTLAND, CORNWALL, AFGHANISTAN (Image)

CRIMEAN WAR - RARE "ITALIAN LEGION" COVER - INGOING FROM G.B. TO MALTA; 7 Apr. 1856 env. (slight staining does not detract) from “ASHBOURNE” (Derbyshire; blue cds on reverse) to “Capt. J.K. Fitzherbert, 3rd Regt. British Italian Legion, Malta [en route to the Crimea]”; the 1d Red (tied by a light “28” Numeral) was insufficient (no 1d Concession rate to those with the rank of Captain), so this letter was treated as entirely unpaid and charged the full "1/-" rate. In 1855 Great Britain raised a British Italian Legion of five regiments of infantry, a British German Legion of eight regiments of light dragoons/infantry, and a British Swiss Legion of three regiments of light infantry; covers connected to any of these forces are rare. [At the end of the war, these soldiers were entitled to return to their country of origin at public expense, although some, fearing a hostile reception at home, settled in the Cape of Good Hope.] Cross Reference: MALTA, DERBYSHIRE, MILITARY - CRIMEAN WAR, ITALY (Image)
