POSTAL HISTORY: 1883 to USA with Cape of Good Hope Britannia ½d grey, 2d brown & 6d violet pair tied by two strikes of barred numeral '13' with 'STELLENBOSCH/AP3/83/CAPE COLONY' cds alongside rated "2"(d), rated "5"(c) in red crayon on face for incoming British Packet ship letter, 'NEW YORK/MAY/4/PAID/D/ALL' opera-glass transit and 'BRADFORD/ MASS' arrival b/s, minor closed tears & edge faults but still very attractive.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1900 (March 30) Cape of Good Hope OHMS cover to Nottinghamshire with fine strike of the 'RECOVERED FROM/WRECK OF MEXICAN' cachet in rosine, ripped-open vertically & with a piece missing from upper-left. [The Mexican collided with Troop Transport Winkfield 80 miles out of port & was sunk]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1910 (circa) Eastern & South African Telegraph Co illustrated red/buff 'TELEGRAM' envelope locally used at Cape Town, minor opening tears.
BOER WAR: 1900 (Aug 7) philatelic cover with VRI Surcharges to 1/- on Orange Free State tied by 'ARMY PO 43/S.AFRICA' cds, to NSW but missent via Fiji (Suva b/s of 7/SEP/01) with Sydney arrival b/s of JA9/02. Outrageous transit time of 16 months, by which time the war was almost over!
BOER WAR: 1901 (May 9) cover endorsed on the flap "Hope better luck/this time/4.5.01" from Victoria at the 1d soldier's rate to a trooper with "Warrens Mtd Infantry/Cape Town" endorsed "Not Known" & with boxed 'NOT TO BE FOUND' h/s in rosine, the reverse with largely fine strike of the rare 'NO ADDRESS AT/A P O/CAPE TOWN/up to APRIL 11 1902' handstamp, 'RETURNED GPO/MY 1/02/CAPE TOWN' in violet & 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/JE7/02/MELBOURNE' b/s in rosine, stained mostly on the reverse but clear of the postal markings. A rare, if distressed, beastie.
