PERKINS BACON PAPER TAX STAMP - LATE USAGE WITH RED "CHARGED ON MAKER" CANCEL; 11 May 1861 usage of the 1856-61 Type V Perkins Bacon 1½d per pound “PAPER LABEL” Tax Stamp (one of few recorded examples) for a single ream of paper weighing “Forty lbs”, so it was a 5/- Tax Stamp. It was used at Mill No. "57" and approved by Excise Officer “Joseph Spring(?)”. It seems to have been used by “Adam Smedley, Grocer, Ashbourne, Derbyshire” (?for wrapping food); it has J. Spring’s own red “[Crown]/CHARGED ON MAKER/PAPER/DUTY/BHG/80” datestamp and is correctly endorsed “Opened”. The Tax was repealed (and stamps withdrawn) on 1 Oct. 1861; this is one of the very latest recorded usages of this elusive giant Perkins Bacon Revenue stamp. Cross Reference : DERBYSHIRE, REVENUES, REVENUES (Image)
